Just wanted to update this thread with first hand information that the Matco 88 tooth rebuild kits I bought are a direct swap into the GearWrench 60 tooth ratchets. So basically, I got a full set of 88 tooth ratchets for ~$130 with shipping. The difference is night and day as compared to Craftsman and I highly suggest this "swap" to anyone.

    Part numbers are as follows.

    Matco 88 tooth rebuild kits:
    AFR8TK (1/4")
    BFR8TK (3/8")
    CFR8TK (1/2")

    GearWrench 60 tooth ratchets:
    81011 (1/4")
    81211 (3/8")
    81304 (1/2")

    '91 318is - OBD-II S52 swapped - E30 M3 5-lug - 5x120 BBS RC090 (E39 Style 5) - TCK D/A coilovers 550/700 [SOLD]
    '87 535i - Vacuum brake conversion [SOLD]
    '93 525iT - 5-speed swap - 320k and counting
    '09 328xi - 6-speed

This looks like it actually may be worth the $598.00 price tag:

I would have to talk with someone who has owned one before I would throw down for that.

The mechanic friend of the family says it has its place but you can't direct the heat like you can with a torch. So he uses both.

Just wanted to say I ordered another two sets of GearWrench ratchets and rebuild kits; one for my dad for father's day and one for a buddy.

Also, GearWrench (and a few other things) are on closeout at Lowes, I got an 8 piece X-beam ratchet-wrench set for $30. The sale has been going on for a while so your local Lowe's may be cleaned out already, but it's worth a stop.

I know a lot of people don't think much of Craftsman tools, but I've always been fond of their old-school, fine-tooth ratchets, which are no longer available. In my experience, they're great to work with and are very durable.

Apparently I'm not alone -- picked these up on eBay after some pretty fierce bidding.

Just got that same one! Not as smooth as our Mitutoyos at work but it's a very accurate tool for the money.

You are REALLY gonna like having that tool in your arsenal. Front end work (of the non destructive type) on most all European makes is a cake with one of those.

I love it! Best $50 I've spent to date. It took me about 45 minutes to get the strut housing off which includes jacking the car up and having some stubborn caliper bolts. I spent 3hrs a few weeks back TRYING to remove the control arm from the the strut housing alone which didn't work.
