so like all other 04' high school grads. i headed to college in september of 04'. I got into Boston University, Brandeis, UNH, Umass Amherst, etc. etc. etc... i didnt know what i wanted to do yet, so i headed to umass lowell, the cheapest tuition place i got into. i went for mechanical engineering. I went to class for a week, then ended up not going. i hated it. i had got a part time job at Bavarian Performance Group immediately and sorta went to school part time still. I still ended up not going and just decided to drop out after talking to my boss and getting the OK to work full time. Ever since then i have been living my dream.
BPG is a BMW only shop which does regular maintenence, but specializes in performance and race car building. we have 4 company race cars, and helped build many cars for club racing. I started off just working for BPG doing all the basic shop chores and basic stuff like oil changes and brakes while watching and helping out the tech during the bigger jobs. that lasted about 3 months. I then became more and more involved with diffsonline which is based out of the same shop (same employee's, same owners (sorta)). Diffsonline is a company that sells used, rebuilt and custom diffs for any BMW. we're talking gear changes, Kazz, Quaife, BMW carriers built from 25%-75% lockup, polished gears, cryo treating, everything you can think of. This is where i fell in love with this job.
I became more and more independent while working, i now work without another tech about 75% of the time. I've done everything from a full suspension rebuild on an e39 to now having finished doing 2 sets of headers on an e46 m3. The current job we are doing is taking a 95' m3 with a blown motor and putting in an 3.2l with OBD1 conversion. There is also an e30 m3 wer are putting in ground control, one of the race cars is getting brakes and suspension, and the 5 or 6 custom diffs we build a week. as well as regular customers. Its amazing. Every day i wake up excited to go to work.
August I move in with brew and jarvis (we're all on this path), and this september I start the BMW program at massbay, and when im done with that i'll be on my way to BMW STEP factory training. I cant wait to keep doing this, and if any of you even remotely are interested in the field, go out and do it, i quit everything i had going to do this, i pissed off my whole family, and went against everything to get what i wanted. and it was all worth it.
