If you can do an s14 swap for the same cost as an m50? Which would you choose?

But the M50 isn't more powerful than the S14 Blunt. ??? The only maintenance the S14 requires over the M50 would be valve adjustments, cap/rotor vs coil packs. Tensioner if it is a problem can be upgraded to S50. Keep it good tune, not too aggressive chip, the oil level up, watch ur pressure and it'll last you 200K+ miles.

Now that's a qualified opinion from someone who has owned both.

Like both but for everyday use M/S5X S14 is not very fuel efficient around town due to lack of torque. I like my S14's but the smoothness of the sixes are perfect for daily use.

I have an S14 that is 277K miles on it and starts everytime, they are like any engine you do routine maintenance and they continue to work.

Talk with FredK, he built a US equivalent of a 320iS two years ago. They add up quickly and remember you need proper transmission.

If the engine was rebuilt by a reputable S14-knowledgeable shop, and you can get it for the same price as an M50 swap, I say, go ahead.

My swap costs started to balloon out of control because I was missing small parts here and there that quickly amount to a lot of money.

With an S14 installed, an E30 is very balanced at the limit, so if you do a lot of tight and winding HPDEs or autocrosses (noncompetitively), it'd be awesome. Otherwise, if you're looking for a DD engine that is nice and torquey, get an M50 (or S50/2 if you can).

Honestly, I'd rather stroke and megasquirt an M20 than to drop in an M50.

true but the 6 is torquey I have all 3.. s14 02.. m52 turbo 318 and a bone stock e30m3. They are all good for different things but an e30 s14 car is anemic to me. Its awesome on the track but too heavy and gutless for me on the street
s14 02 is a fun car that does everything pretty well but wont scare you in the power delivery unless its a built 2.5
stock m50 e30 isnt anything to brag about either but it has so much potential to make big power more cheaply. thats all. I like them all for different reasons. And you are absolutely right about the s14. properly maintained they are dead reliable. It just takes some dollars to get them there

Who did the rebuild and why and too what specs? Very low mileage for an engine to rebuild it.

I'm not looking for loads of power. i just want it to be a fun daily. something that when i get on the throttle it responds. i have a 98 m3 that im most likely selling once the e30 is built. so i know what it feels to have that type of power... I like how the 318 feels in the corners and overall driving, it just feels a little under powered at times.
