Steering wheel is wobbly!

Is it normal for the steering wheel to wobble back and fourth (As in the direction of the front and rear of the car). It wobbles slightly when car is parked. But wobbles a lot more when the car is driving at high speeds. How do I go about fixing this?

be more specific....is it wobbling on the shaft? or coming from the steering rack...

could be unballanced front wheels, could be TABs, could be CABs, you could have bent control arms, could need new loli pops, could be bad hubs, could be the steering linkage, could be a dampener in the connection of the steering rack to shaft, could be something with the steering rack, could be a bent rim....should i continue?

elaborate more on your steering shake. my car had them, i blew a tire once, got it fixed, rim got balanced and the shake went away, kinda weird lol. my buddy had a car that had the shakes, the connection of the steering rack to column was SUPER ghetto and had insane shakes.

hes talking about forward and backwards, not side to side.

If it's an airbag car there is a big nut you have to tighten down by the firewall along the steering colum shaft.

It is a non air bag car. I am talking about the steering wheel itself. The cars control arm, ball joint, etc is fine. I dont know how to tighten the steering wheel itself. It is aligned and put in propperly, but it still wobbles....

I hope somebody understands?. :/

Steering wheel vibrates/ wobbles at high speeds, but the car itself does not wobble nor shake.

I am suspecting its the steering wheel?

pop off the bmw roundel in the middle. check and make sure the 22mm bolt is tight. if it is and there is still wobble, go get a spacer and put it in before the steering wheel on the column, then bolt it back up. washers at the hardware store work

Thanks! Finally somebody gets me. Is there a specific size washer I should be getting? Or anything that fits? Should it be a a snug fit?

any washer that fits in the wheel and over the hub is fine. its just a washer, the snugger the better- but doesnt really matter

While you have the roundel off, make the wheel move and see if the shaft moves or if it's just the wheel.

yeah it usually means its not the stock wheel. i put a non airbag wheel on my airbag car and had this problem. it wobbled, my steering lock didnt work, the light and wiper levers were way too close to the back of the wheel, my turn signal canceller didnt work. put some washers/spacers in and everything was back to working order! Im estimating i have about a half an inch of spacers in there to keep things snug.

Yes like e3spdfrk check the splines on the wheel. the wheel is aluminum and the column is something harder. if the wheel has been wobbling for a long while you might run into the splines being so worn down on the steering wheel you might encounter the wheel slipping while turning, aka very bad. better safe than sorry!

If its not that, check the steering u joint on the steering shaft. Mine is causing that problem now.

Make sure the key is in a turned before you put the wheel on. Otherwise it won't go all the way down.
