Is it really a great daily driver? You are buying a 4dr rwd hatch. The amount of space that the rwd components take off the back is ridiculous. The trunk is pathetically small. I couldnt fit a large case in it. And it's a 4dr car for two passengers, because you can also give up on the idea of having legroom at ALL for your passengers in the back seat.
I ask any of you to put your seats to your settings in your e30. Now sit in your backseat. If you're over your average theme park ride height requirement (if you're not a midget) then your passenger will feel completely squished. Now you're in a 3 series.... even the e46 (dont know about the e90) has limited rear space. Take what you felt by half and you should have what a 1 Series is.
Space aside, you're paying a couple extra bucks than your regular FWD hatch for the rwd drivetrain (and the BMW badge). And yes it might add on handling, but who the hell cares for handling in a daily driver? Give me a gas saving 4dr Civic and I'll be happy. When I feel like pushing my car's abilities I'll take the e30 out.
Now you're paying a couple of extra bucks for the 2.5l base model engine. With VWs new Jetta coming out with a 2.5l base model, I highly doubt BMW will offer anything that's under VW. If they do, it's self-humiliation of the brand name.
I'm going tomorrow again to the dealership to look at a 1 Series that I have yet to convince my mother against buying it. She loves that.... thing. I'll try to bring a camera to take some pics. I might rather the Golf the drives now than the 1 series, but alas.... not my car.
Edit: Also I saw in a magazine today "The future Ms" and there was a picture of the ///M 1 Series... named obviously the M1. Thanks BMW, for butchering your history.Erick Mahle | FullOpp Drift | YouTube

I don't need that much space. And a daily driver that can handle well if you decide to push it is better than one that will never handle well. I'd rather have the option.
I live in NE where we get a lot of snow every winter and I'd take a well balanced, RWD car over a FWD car anyday.
~260hp AND 30mpg is very tempting too.
I doubt too many car makers are worrying about competing with VW's 2.5. 150hp from a twin-cam 2.5L by today's standards is pathetic. BMW's 2.0L 4-cyl puts out that much horsepower. Nevermind all the Japanese 4-bangers that outpower 6 cylinders in the same class.
And as much as I love the M1, it wasn't 100% a BMW. I could care less what BMW calls future models. I don't buy cars for their names.

Well.. there was that one dude that stuck an S62 into an E30.. along with all the sensors and differential... :P
but still, that thing would haul balls.. or the diesel version, you could tow like two cars with your E30 :P1988 325iC - "Betty" - Daily Driver/Project Car.
