maint records, thrust arm bushings, make sure if its an auto reverse engages quickly and properly(usually the first sign of tranny problems) if its a touring take a good look at the wiring at the rear hatch as it can be a nightnamre to fix once it starts to fray. Do a cluster check to make sure mileage is correct. Push in the button on the right side of cluster, while holding in button turn ignition to on position. Cluster will go through aa series of checks and display the vin of the car the cluster came with. Thats all i can think of off the top of my head.
Mainly im leaning to a 540it auto car. I look at my other option. Today a 540I auto sadly.
They never made a 540iT for the states. If you want a V8 in an E34 touring, it has to be the 530iT.... I would try and find one with a blown motor / trans and swap it out for a M30B35 with a 5 speed.

540i auto kills it, look for manual man!
v8s = leaking valley covers, (requires removal of harness/fuel rail/intake manifold) to do water pump/o-rings/gaskets etc. Leaking power steering/boxes.
All e34s suffer from shitty front suspension/steering components
Shitty door panels and some with shitty headliners
LOTS AND LOTS of electrical components in the AC/Heater system
Make absolutly sure the intake manifold & pullies looks original, untouched, if it had a supercharger and it was removed to sell these would show signs of removal ETC

Or that could actually be a good sign that someone bothered to replace the old gaskets.....
