    How do you tell starters apart?

    I think 1 is an M50 auto, 1 is an M50 manual, maybe 2 more are M20 manuals but I'm not sure. How the hell do you tell?

        If parts #'s arn't there, call a parts house, find someone with the starter you need, have them show you the starter , match it up with the one's you have, have them test yours, they do that for free here, and either you have the right one and its been tested or buy the new one. Some srarters are a PIA to install, i'd buy the new one.

          auto/manual starters are the same on M20s, not sure about M50s.

          can you use an M50 starter on an G260/M20 flywheel?

            Nope. M50 starters and M20 starters have different teeth. I'm moving from an M50 flywheel to an M20 one. So I need to pick the right starter. Changing it out isn't fun on the car.

                well I'd like to be able to ID them for future use. Maybe sell some. I seem to have a crap load of everything lately.

                I also found all of these cleaning up yesterday.

                  Wouldn't the x50 be threaded? and the m20 not.

                  Thought the m20's used a nut and bolt and the x50's starters were thread for just a bolt. meh just guessing off vague info. Maybe the bellhousing is threaded on the ZF tranny.

                    None of the bellhousings are threaded. I've always had a nut bolt combo regardless the motor/trans. I've done all combos but ZF on an M20.

                      pop the solenoid with 12v and count teeth on the pinion gear.

                      make sure not to give the motor 12v as a 5hp motor spinning freely on the ground could cause some pain. put it in a vice perhaps.

                            I can tell you the short stalky ones on the bottom middle and left are m20's. The other two are probably M50's. Auto or manual are the same part numbers for an M20, and the same part numbers for an M50.

                            M20 e pre 12/86 = 12411466097
                            M20 i + e 87+ = 12411726504
                            M50 = 12411740379

                            Use the starter for the respective motor and "possibly" trans the flywheel came from.
                            How's that?
