I would usually say go with an m30 or s38 but I have recently been having dreams about s54 in an e9 and in my dreams it is awesome

Go with a modded M30 with triple webers and call it a day. Here's one from about a year ago now.

Carbs would be period correct - but f-me if I could tune them. Seems to be a lost art.

I'd shy away from the s38 - unless you have cash to burn. I'm sure it would be a great swap - but the cost is astronomical IMHO.

I bet you the curb weight of an e9 is close to an e30? Just a guess.

If that is the case, I'd go euro "L-block" m30. It's an AMAZING motor. It's super revy - big bore - short stroke. Goes like mad. But they are about 1k for a motor with some mileage...

For some reason supercharged m30's are where I think it's at. (or a turbo - but I hate lag, and non-linear boost) - but with that said, a turbo m30 is nuts cheap.

              M30/90 or go home.

Maybe a worked, euro, high compression, ITB, header, port/polish, cammed, oversized valved, bored, stroked, fucking 350 N/A hp M30 based monster.

              Nothing less, nothing more.

Go with an M102 or M106, a factory turbo M30 would feel right at home in an E9.

an E9 with a M60 V8 and some nice flowmasters would be pretty cool in my book.

S38 makes sense: M30 based, the E9 racecars used M30s with ITBs and (i think) some had DOHC, it's badass, and it bolts in. Swap has been done before.

FUCK the M50/S5x motors, even the S54. None of them belong in the E9.

S38 or go home, M30s I wouldn't bother with. Would cost a lot more money to build one NA to barely S38 power level than to just put an S38 in. Metric mechanic 4L stroker M30 is 300hp and $13k, S38 in good condition is $5k tops and 315hp. Makes sense.
