I had an itch for a Fiat 500 Abarth upon graduation, but a two year old 1'er can be had for the same price. Since then I've been semi interested, but I"m still leary about the fuel pump and turbo issues I've heard all about.
For all things 24v, check out Markert Motorworks!

Direct injection is great if you plan on leaving everything stock. Otherwise, you will want an auxilary injector set. I wish I had 4 extra port injectors on my GLI to take some of the load off the HPFP, and clean the intake valves. The intake valves on a DI motor tend to look like blackened chicken legs from all the caked on oil after 50k.

^ has the VW community come up with a good way of cleaning the carbon buildup off of FSI motors yet? my GLI has nearly 92K miles on it and I'm wondering about the buildup it (most likely) has.

I put a GT3071r on mine when it has 80k on the clock, the valves looked like utter crap. Took me a few hours to clean them up, even then they didn't look like I wanted them to.

Best bet is an Oil catch can and methanol injection.

I have a 2011 135i. Single turbo. It's an absolute blast to drive and handles great just wish it had a real LSD. It's fast too. The torque curve is awesome and has good power in all gears at just about any RPM. As far as the butt dyno goes it feels faster in most NORMAL driving situations than my roommate's e39 M5 and other e46 M3s i've driven. Obviously we know the M's are faster cars but for normal driving the little 135 just feels faster with that torque curve.

All that being said I enjoy driving my well sorted 325es just as much but for different reasons.

            Here they are:

I went to check 135i prices after reading this thread, OMFG ebay is on to me! I can't remember the last time I looked up 1 series on ebay...

I really want to take a 135i for a spin but honestly I want something with 4 doors for my next car. I'm thinking an M5
