    yes.

but seriously. i knew i would eat my words for that 10k comment. yes there are nice examples out there, i was speaking in general. i mean, cramer, dear god your car was on my class binder in school for over a year, and everytime anyone would ask me about it, i loved to tell everyone of the glorious e30 m3.

the e30 m3 is probably one of my favorite "realistic" cars. but right now, its not a good idea.

and with this post, i will no longer comment on armeN's questions of M3's.

I'm gonna have to go with Blunt on this one.

Financing a 35k car is one thing. If you have to take a loan out to buy a 10k car, you can't afford it. E30 M3's make great 2nd cars, but as a daily, you're gonna go nuts. Most of these cars are getting into the 140-150k range, where even if it is nicely maintained, there's a good chance that something is gonna go in the motor. That's 7-8k right there. Add to the fact that there's a good chance that it's gonna have bits that aren't well maintained, and you're gonna nickel and dime yourself to death. Even consumeables on these cars are going way up in price. Control arms are going for over 200 bucks a peice now, brakes and rotors have gone way up in price as well. These are not cheap cars.

You're also gonna have to find a bank willing to float you a 4k loan for a 15 year old car - good luck.

Personally, if you've got 6k to play with, find a cherry late model 325is.

He had a cherry late model 325i but he sold it already (was going to buy an Evo VIII I guess.)

I don't think youre in a position to own one if you only have $200 in disposable income per month. At that rate it would take you 2 years just to afford a stock rebuild on the motor.

They are reliable, it won't be a headache as far as that goes, but it sucks as a street car. I daily mine because I enjoy a high strung car, but for 99% of people it's too much to handle on a daily basis. Even my GF complains after just 15min riding in it. She starts hanging on to the shift lever so it doesnt vibrate so loud (which they all do). That's just one example...

Half the people on this forum can barely correctly maintain stock 318s and 325s. Why is this thread even here?

with only $200 extra a month to spend I seriously doubt he could afford the insurance and the car payment...

should have kept the E30 bud. even with full coverage my insurance is cheap as hell.

plus a paid for non-M e30 drives a whole lot better than a Mythical Evo or whatever...

Guys, not everybody has $2000+ cash lying around. Hell, I live check to check and will 'til I finish school. Any yes, I borrowed a nominal amount of money on my car too. I don't think it's dumb at all. It makes a lot more sense to me than spending $130/mo. than the $450/mo I was paying for my '02 GT. If you have to borrow a bit on the car, hell, I say go for it. Do what YOU want to do.

yeah, but the initial purchase price of an E30 M3 is just the first part of the equation. I think that's the main point we're trying to make here.

I doubt he'll spend any more a month on an M3 than what I wind up spending on my 325is, lol. It's a disease really, it makes no difference whether it's an M car or not, once you've got it, it's gonna cost you. There is always SOMETHING that "needs" to be done, or if I'm honest about it, I "want" to do to it. So many things, so little money. So I just keep chipping away at it and he will too no matter which old E30 he chooses. The MAIN thing is, enjoy it. That's the purpose in owning one, NOT practicality. If I wanted something practical, I would have bought a used Honda Accord, NOT an E30. But that's not why I bought the E30. It's all about the passion for cars and the passion for driving cars. There's something that an E30 has that is intangible, but it's there, that je-ne-sais-quoi. So, in the end, your decision comes down to this: Do you WANT a practical car? Or do you want a car that is an expression of your passion for cars?
