The "3" in R3vlimited was "1337" or "LEET" (leetspeak) It was one of the first intenet meme kind of thing - very popular 10 years ago. IIRC, revlimited.com was available at the time, but the old site owner choose r3vlimited instead.

interestingly enough, you and i have been on r3v for about the same time. i should have created an account back then. never bothered creating an account since i only used r3v for reference. my gf had the e30. still regret it. :(

He never told me what it meant, but one can only assume that it's a play on "revlimited" with a 3 for either e30 or 3-series.

That's what I always though it came from. And the 3 is like a backward E.
