    I'd just like to vent.

For those non-novel readers out there here's the cliffs.
    • Attempted to fix car.
    • Couldn't fix car, took it to the mechanic.
    • Mechanic fixed the car.
    • Had the car for less than 15 minutes, before being backed into a parking lot.
    • After the body shop taking a look, I was driving the definition of a jalopy
    • End.

So half way through this past summer, I tackled my rear wheel bearings. (Good thinking brainwave.) I thought from previous work on my car, I could do it, change my fuel lines, dash swap, minor things here and there. Didn't happen, my car sat in my driveway for over a month while I tinkered when I had time off from work, which was maybe an hour a night. Finally took it to a respected mechanic in the neighborhood who fixed the bearings while I spent a week down the shore for vacation before school started blah, blah, blah.

Monday I picked up the car from the mechanic and had a dentist appointment in about 30 minutes. Fajah said to go early to get out early, fine whatever. Head over to the dentist, parked behind a Chevy work truck, went in and unusually went straight to the chair. Woohoo awesome dentist service. They put the bib on me, step out and the next thing I hear is, "Is that your BMW outside?"
I immediately respond, "Yeah it's mine."
The Receptionist says, "You should come out here." I go out and a lady is standing there with an apologetic expression on her face. Immediately apologizes, and I'm like fine, let's take a look. (This lady was driving the Chevy work truck, her husband's.) Upon walking outside, I see cracked taillight, ok no big have a spare in my room. But from further inspection, she pushed in the rear panel between the taillights a good 2-3 inches causing separation from the driver's rear quarter panel. Ugh, get her information, go back and have the worst dentists appointment ever, go home, tell my parents, can you say livid? Later that night, talk with the husband about insurance coverage and possible outcomes.

Fast forward: B.S. between myself and insurance companies, and auto body shops. Wednesday I left for school (3 hours away), so now it was in the hands of my parents, godsend thank god. Family friend who started out working mechanically on BMWs and other fine European makes transitioned into Auto body but still stuck with BMWs, Landrovers, Mercedes, etc. Came over drove the car to his shop, and threw it on the lift. He later than talked to my parents that night saying, immediately he felt the car was "off" when he got in and drove off. When the car was on the lift, his mechanics found numerous safety issues, fuel lines about to rupture due to heavy friction from the steering joint (More than likely my fault), multiple holes in the floorboard and around the car due to rust, and mentioned that he was shocked that one of the wheels hadn't fell off due to many suspension components completely rusted. Textbook unsafe car. Well he said cosmetic repair alone, it would be in the range of $3000 bones. Holy $h!t, but that included rust repair, damage repair, and a full respray as a favor.

Well, to get to the point of the story, my car has been totaled due to being completely unsafe to drive, which hurts more than one can imagine, even though most of you could imagine. So it turns out the lady's insurance company gave me $2900 for my car, which I would never have asked for due to it being an 89' 325i automatic, but it also hurts because of the money I invested into that car, worked for mind you, not mommy and daddy's money, has just been flushed down the toilet.

So I like to say thank you for this entire community for being such an asset in every way possible. I'm gonna hold off on another E30 till I get out of college/the military, so anybody have a good recommendation for a good entry level mountain bike? :D

    Eesh! Wow what a story!

My $.02: the situation sucks. Could have happened to anyone. At least you got something out of it. Take the money and start over again.

Yeah, I have a habit of rambling. My plan to get back in is early model, four door, euro bumpers, m30, and all the trimmings. :)

im sorry to hear what happened to you

id recommend looking into using the check the insurance company gave you and buy the car back. Same thing just happened to my brothers e36 318is and he bought it back for 400$ and pocketed like 3k. Were stripping every good part off his now "old" car and in the process of shopping for his next e36 to throw his parts onto

Sorry to hear that, at least you can take those $$$ parts from it, get a nice stock e30 for $3000, then install all the goodies. Also you might be able to get some money back by parting out the one you have right now.

I agree with your choice for a next E30. That thing will be timeless, and you'll be hanging out in showrooms all day long when it's done.

Really sorry to hear about all this crap, I feel your pain to a degree.

First of all, I know exactly how you feel. After last years (not this years) E30 picnic I had a lady in a raised Pathfinder pull out infront of me. It was one of those deals where I just watched her do it, and she watch me coming at her, but she didn't brake, didn't speed up, and due to other things I had no option but to brake. Hit her square in the middle at about 4mph, enough to shatter the entire front end of my car above the bumper. My bumper never made contact with her :hitler:

Interestingly enough, My car was totaled. I got about $2200 for my car, did all the repairs myself, am still living with a dinged up side panel, and bought myself a very nice entry level mountain bike with the change. So if you're serious, I do have some[year old] ideas :)

Edit: I bought my car back as well. Cost me $300. It was of course worth that just in parts.

That's the reason I don't put too much customization into my cars anymore. My M3 and M tech are modded but they aren't my daily drivers and I have collector car insurance on them. Back in the day I had a really nice 85 325e that I converted to 327iS, full bodykit and countless hours and money was spent on it. 6 months out of the body shop with fresh paint and new front core support from a minor accident I had, I got rear ended by some fool not paying attention. The car was totaled just like that and his insurance tried to screw me over. I fought hard and got a fair amount out of it because I had receipts for the expensive parts but you can't get back all the time you spend working on it. So when I see threads about people doing crazy restorations, custom widebodies, etc. I can't help but think, it takes months and even years to build some of these cars yet it only takes a split second for it to be gone. Kinda makes me appreciate the stockish cars even more.

Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. Sorry to hear about the situation and the car-related crap you've been through. Things will work out way better the next time you're looking to get into a car.

Wow man that's a bummer. Atleast you're getting a decent amount for it.

A decent entry level mountain bike? My personal recommendation is a Cannodale F5. A good step above a cheap entry level bike and can take a lot of abuse and still not break the bank.
