For those non-novel readers out there here's the cliffs.
So half way through this past summer, I tackled my rear wheel bearings. (Good thinking brainwave.) I thought from previous work on my car, I could do it, change my fuel lines, dash swap, minor things here and there. Didn't happen, my car sat in my driveway for over a month while I tinkered when I had time off from work, which was maybe an hour a night. Finally took it to a respected mechanic in the neighborhood who fixed the bearings while I spent a week down the shore for vacation before school started blah, blah, blah.
Monday I picked up the car from the mechanic and had a dentist appointment in about 30 minutes. Fajah said to go early to get out early, fine whatever. Head over to the dentist, parked behind a Chevy work truck, went in and unusually went straight to the chair. Woohoo awesome dentist service. They put the bib on me, step out and the next thing I hear is, "Is that your BMW outside?"
I immediately respond, "Yeah it's mine."
The Receptionist says, "You should come out here." I go out and a lady is standing there with an apologetic expression on her face. Immediately apologizes, and I'm like fine, let's take a look. (This lady was driving the Chevy work truck, her husband's.) Upon walking outside, I see cracked taillight, ok no big have a spare in my room. But from further inspection, she pushed in the rear panel between the taillights a good 2-3 inches causing separation from the driver's rear quarter panel. Ugh, get her information, go back and have the worst dentists appointment ever, go home, tell my parents, can you say livid? Later that night, talk with the husband about insurance coverage and possible outcomes.
Fast forward: B.S. between myself and insurance companies, and auto body shops. Wednesday I left for school (3 hours away), so now it was in the hands of my parents, godsend thank god. Family friend who started out working mechanically on BMWs and other fine European makes transitioned into Auto body but still stuck with BMWs, Landrovers, Mercedes, etc. Came over drove the car to his shop, and threw it on the lift. He later than talked to my parents that night saying, immediately he felt the car was "off" when he got in and drove off. When the car was on the lift, his mechanics found numerous safety issues, fuel lines about to rupture due to heavy friction from the steering joint (More than likely my fault), multiple holes in the floorboard and around the car due to rust, and mentioned that he was shocked that one of the wheels hadn't fell off due to many suspension components completely rusted. Textbook unsafe car. Well he said cosmetic repair alone, it would be in the range of $3000 bones. Holy $h!t, but that included rust repair, damage repair, and a full respray as a favor.
Well, to get to the point of the story, my car has been totaled due to being completely unsafe to drive, which hurts more than one can imagine, even though most of you could imagine. So it turns out the lady's insurance company gave me $2900 for my car, which I would never have asked for due to it being an 89' 325i automatic, but it also hurts because of the money I invested into that car, worked for mind you, not mommy and daddy's money, has just been flushed down the toilet.
So I like to say thank you for this entire community for being such an asset in every way possible. I'm gonna hold off on another E30 till I get out of college/the military, so anybody have a good recommendation for a good entry level mountain bike? :D
- Attempted to fix car.
- Couldn't fix car, took it to the mechanic.
- Mechanic fixed the car.
- Had the car for less than 15 minutes, before being backed into a parking lot.
- After the body shop taking a look, I was driving the definition of a jalopy
- End.
