    WRONG

I'm not going argue this statement other than say. Where did you inform yourself of this information.

My ZF and short shift shift and change in milliseconds...if it were a manual I'd fall asleep as it changed at a lower RPM and accelerated in less speed and longer time! Unless its a semi squenical race box Manuals are ALWAYS quicker*

    *unless clutch is slipping LoL

Only thing with an auto is you'll keep WOT all the time....

Unless you money shift all the time in your manual and like to replace clutches/trannies.

woah haha you cant argue with a bare minimum fact. an automatic transmission will shift faster than a human can ever shift. im speaking on the technical side.

your saying you shift faster than the hydraulic system of the transmission.

*edit and i may have mis-typed my post your arguing with. im saying an automatic trans will always be faster(as in shifting), not necessarily that the car will be faster

except my grandma can shift faster than my brother's honda box, and she can probably shift faster than a 4hp22.
          SOME automatic transmissions are faster.

There's no bare minimum fact, even IF that made sense.

if you say so lol. yes there are poorly designed autos. but the OP is asking about fast automatics. which is not your brothers pos honda box

You seem inexperienced, or misinformed, or both.

The SLR is auto and had a very fast lap time on top gear.

have you ever worked on automatics? like physically pulling them apart? i have worked in a shop and can tell you that you can build up a automatic trans that will always shift faster than a human can.

and that is what the OP was asking for. a fast auto. i never said i thought it was smart or that i even like autos

Wrong. Unless you mean, like, a few hundred milliseconds.

if it were a manual I'd fall asleep as it changed at a lower RPM and accelerated in less speed and longer time!

                    Also wrong.

Bottom line, older autos are slower because they tend to have less gears, bad gearing and a torque converter which is basically a rubber band between your engine and transmission and robs you of power. But if you have a crazy high-hp setup (I mean 500+hp) they can help because they are more consistent, and you can brake boost off the line with a turbo, etc. The crazy fast auto drag cars you refer to? Those are on 2 or 3-speed powerglides. Not always, but most of them. You typically will not see a 4hp22 car searing down the track. They tend to be laughably slow.

As it turns out, newer autos are tending to be faster because they have improved efficiency by increasing the number of gears and tending to lock up the torque converter whenever it is possible. That coupled with the consistency and shift speed means they will typically take the win over their manual counterparts. But we are talking cars that are only a few years old here, not 20 year old 250hp E30s.

He's not asking about fast automatics, nor has he mentioned building his e30s tranny. I know auto tranny's CAN be faster, no one can argue against that. You were saying all auto trannys ARE faster, which was wrong

as stated already, most new automatic transmissions can shift faster than we ever can. however, the added drive train loss of an auto usually means that the manual cars are faster in the 1/4 mile.

also stated, old crappy autos will shift slow. granted.

a lot of of really fast drag cars use crash boxes. each gear is it's own lever. and you pull each of them individually. no clutch pedal.

I dont know, the tranny in my touring behind the M52 shifts pretty hard when I floor it. Seems to shift firm and right at 6 grand, does not seem to mind the heavy ass wagon.
