You could always pull out the *gasp* yellow pages and call around. You know, that other thing you can do with phones.

I pay around $8 a quart for 15w50. Nothing like a $50 DIY oil change; makes you wonder what kind of crap they use when a lube shop charges you $19.99, pays their trained monkey, and still profits.

Mobil 1 is a Group III oil, just like most oils that call themselves "synthetic." There's really nothing special about it to make it better than any other Group III oil. But there's no need for a "real" synthetic oil (i.e., Group IV or V base stock) for an older BMW anyway, so Mobil 1 is fine.
For the money, I'd strongly prefer Brad Penn PG1, which is similar to the original formulation of Kendall GT1 that all the IMSA and Porsche turbo guys used to run in the '70s and '80s. Cheaper than Mobil 1 and significantly better performing on the track.
If it really means a lot to you to run a "real" synthetic oil, then pay a couple of bucks more for a PAO- or ester-based formula, like Red Line, Amsoil, Elf Excellium (a.k.a., Total Quartz Racing), or Motul 300V.sigpic
