The 1991 318i is really a fantastic car. Hard to complain - it's got the more "modern" stuff, four doors for versatility, and a decent engine (upgrade over the m10).
While it may not be really powerful, its got torque, and it still puts a smile on my face.
Though I'm going to swap a 24v in, I still have a lot of respect for the m42 e30 layout.

    1983 Peugeot 505 STI
    1992 Volvo 240 Wagon
    2009 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Sport 4WD

I paid 2400 for my 91 alpine white II, in 20s... I dont think 318s should be worth much more

I read somewhere that they imported less 318iS than e30 m3's. Not sure if it's true tho. IS specific not I

In Australia a really ratty shit 318iS goes for $3500 AUD (almost same as USD) and a mint perfect one goes for around $7000-8000.

They are generally around $5000-6000 down here and are very uncommon but quite popular. We got them late 1989-1991.

The market for e30s in general has improved.

The cars that sell for cheap are not sold by enthusiasts generally speaking. As in the case above with the m3. You can find good examples cheap from people who just see the e30 as a 20 year old BMW. But you won't usually find one that is enthusiast owned for the same kind of prices.
^Probably the truest statement I've read. You have to do what I call "catching a dummy" someone who doesn't know what they have and thus undervalue it.

The bottom line is this; It all depends on who you are and what you want. If your like me and can't swap an engine or repaint your car etc. Its best not to be playing around with junk. If I really want a car I'm not going to be buying something with 10 owners on the title, any thing salvage/rebuilt, anything with blown that, slipping this, 170k+ miles, rusted out, or meeting some shady character in a MacDonald Parking lot. I've found that you'll all ways loose money in the long run trying to put money into these things. Get ready to spend 4k -5k buy one thats all together. That way when you get it you don't have to worry about replacing this and that, you can get right to wheels and drop or whatever your fancy is.

If you are the kind of person who can rebuild an engine, weld anything, and prep and paint a car etc. Then buy some shell for 1k (probably less) and go to work. Alot guys in this forum are just that person, and I don't see why they just don't buy cars make them incredible and sell for a profit like vlad! I wish I was one of these guys, however my dad didn't know shit about cars to pass down to me, I didn't go to school for anything like that and at this point I can barely change suspension components without a bunch of swearing FML!!

I had one that had black vinly interior, sunroof and power windows all for $300 (not running when I bought it):
