Thanks for all of the comments guys, I’m still laughing at some of them. I apologize to the readers who were hoping for a murder mystery…or just a murder.
I looked around his shop for anything BMW. He had some plastic bumpers left and that was all I saw. He said he is going to go through his stuff and he’ll get back to me if he finds anything. Apparently, he was on the verge of parting out the engine that I bought, though that could have been a sales tactic.
Mike is the real life Doc Hudson. I later learned that the unexcited, slightly delayed response he projected was that of wisdom afforded by his time spent working at Turner Motorsports during the day and Schneller at night years ago. He was swapping engines in these cars when e30’s were still new.
I think he would like to be working on BMWs more frequently. When I told him I wanted to go 5-Lug he became animated and asked if he could do it. I also think he was bummed when he didn’t get to help install the headlights - probably just to make sure I did it right (you really should of saw the glare I got when I told him I didn't replace the rubber mounts with new OEM BMW). He even mentioned that if he was installing the engine on my car he would give me a warranty on it.
When were walking around the outside of his shop, I asked how people heard about him – he answered word of mouth. So I suppose this is his word of mouth from me. I’ll call him for the appropriate contact info if anyone local is interested – although he told me one story of a client flying him out to rewire the engine so it would run right, so my guess is he will travel too.
As for the engine, I’m at work for most of the day so no updates there. I think it is a 525, or as Mike said it, five and a quarter block, and m3 head with cams.
