Today I learned and important and often overlooked item to take care of when performing an engine swap.
When putting the motor pack in, you'll need someone underneath to make sure the driveshaft gets back in its place in the guibo.
Otherwise, you'll get EVERYTHING else done, and realize that you need to go back and pick up the engine hoist to raise the engine up again and stuff the driveshaft back where it goes. What a dumbass :)
Another side note - you need a big ass crowbar to get an m42 water pump. Didn't know this - nothing like the M20, that's for sure.
Today saw the above mentioned task, replacing the linkage and shift carrier, securing the motor mounts, reinstalling the radiator and fan shroud (and taking a good 30 minutes to get the damn cooling system to behave - christ. Same shit on new bimmers too.) A quick vaccuum and check to make sure all was cleaned up and secure, and then..finally, after a few long days of wrenching, I took the hoodless car for a spin (read: beat run) to feel her out. Man, is this a new car now. The old 214k engine was tired and beat - this new one really, REALLY screams.
New parts include - valve cover gasket, water pump, thermostat, timing tensioner.
Had some thick white smoke at startup - probably some water in there somewhere from sitting out in Adam's driveway, but it seems to be gone now. With the LSD in there, this car can move. I have a new found respect for 4 banger bimmers :)
Hood went back on and now all it needs is a wash and a taillight!
Tomorrow is the race - I drop the car off and finally see this deal done!Comment

Why do you need a crowbar for the pump?
You're supposed to move two of the bolts to the holes on the side and screw it out. For that information, I want your sedan. The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.Comment
