I was going to repaint my MG in satin British Racing Green, but decided not to. The problem with satin paint is that pretty much if ANYTHING gets on it, it ruins it. Basically any amount of rubbing on the paint polishes it, causing uneven looking patches and the like. Even washing it with a wash mit can fuck it up. So unless you plan to only take the car out on sunny days every few weekends, or plan to repaint it every few months, I wouldn't go satin.
Vinyl wrap is the answer. Matte finish, highly durable and the same cost as a nice paint job.
Vinyl wrap is not a horrible idea. It wont polish up like paint would. But most wraps are only rated to last about 7 years and it will be very difficult to wrap the whole car without any seams or wrinkles. The guy wrapping it would need to be very talented and even then it still wont come out as perfect as a paint job can.
I would be very surprised if that Porsche is wrapped. Vinyl just doesn't contour that smoothly.
From experience, matte paint is porous like a sponge. If a cat walks across the hood, the dirt will be visible from a distance. Also, good luck selling a matte paint car.
I've had multiple cars painted and always regretted not doing an OEM color. If you want something unique, perhaps British racing green.
+1
I'm going to go ahead and assume your e30 is getting a british racing green spray in the future? I think I've heard you suggest it at least 4 or 5 times in the last few months. :) doooooo ittttt!!!!

Doesn't have to cost as much, but it does when you're getting an exotic wrapped. They charge a premium because of the care and attention they receive and can charge out the ass simply because it's work done to an exotic. Oil changes are several hundred dollars and they're no more difficult than you're average one.
I'm also willing to bet that SLR and 458 are wraps. Paint the car properly and do a wrap later on if you want to have some fun. Commiting to something that is a fad for thousands is ridiculous.
I'm thinking about painting my auto in a matte red. I have not seen another e30 in matte red. I have seen light blue, green, and black. So I would like to see an e30 in matte red. I think it will look good.

I've seen vinyl wraps that are pretty damn perfect (at least in pictures).
The first car I ever rode in was an e30
