    Latest shitty luck thread...

    Hello R3v,

This actually happened a few weeks ago now. I was too busy with job interviews and helping my parents with a renovation of one of their rentals so I didn't have time to even take a look at it until a week or so ago.

Since having owned it for a little more than a year I've had to replace:

    Fuel Pump
    Rear Subframe
    Rear Subframe bushings
    Trailing Arm bushings
    Rear stabilizing bar links
Break rebuild kits for all four calipers
    New injectors
Old rack crapped out so I went ahead and did a Z3 steering rack swap
(Inner and Outer tie rod ends respectively)

Found a short that was causing my rear driver's side window not to work. (it turned out I had to take out the seats to get to the short that was on the floor under the carpet.)

    Starter motor
    Spark plug wires
Headlights from my sister backing into me (new hella projectors)
    Driver's side fender
Re-sprayed the entire grill black again so it would all match.

and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few other things.

Well after the most recent shitty luck (replacing the rack, tie rod ends, etc.) I go and pick up my gf. She was excited since she didn't have to pick me up this time, the weather was nice and we had all the windows down, sunroof open, and some music playing. As we were enjoying this we come up to a stop sign that I've crossed at least 5 times a week for the past 3 years. The speed limit is 35 and I'm easily going 5 under trying to be careful. Out of nowhere I hear a loud crack and automatically think the worst.

My diff shattered/driveshaft came apart/drive axles twisted/the engine fell out.

I was able to roll to a gas station to find this :(

how in the fuck does that even happen. twisted axles causes the engine to fall out?
          What in the fuck?

and how in the fuck can you push the car, with an engine dragging underneath it. You certainly didn't lift the car off of it,

oh wait. nevermind. I get it. thats what you were thinking.

Bah. thats not even a problem. new strut tube and call it a day. but if I were you I would reconsider working on that car. I neglected my car for nearly two years, and haven't anywhere near the amount of issues as you.

Lucky for my car though. I stopped neglecting her.

Ouch. What did your wheel have to say about that?

I was gonna buy that car, but you beat me to it... Hope your luck changes for the better man. Look at it this way, eventually you'll replace everything and it will be a new car.

Most of the stuff that you replaced actually seem like normal things to be replaced on the e30.

Now that caliper issue you have is pretty scary and something you would never expect in a million years. Did the bolts back out or did the two ears off of the strut housing both snap?

All of these repairs are symptoms of a 20+ year old car. I have done all of this sans the caliper falling off. I use blue locktite on my caliper bolts.
IN FACT, 3/4 of your list I did in the first month to sort the car out. I replaced every piece or rubber with urethane the first week, re-did the entire brake system, CSB, Guibo, shift linkadge motor/ tranny mounts, and more. I did these things initially, and haven't touched anything I worked on since (7 years later). So I wouldn't call the first part bad luck, I call it preventive maintanence. The caliper thing befuddles me though.

Bolts backed out. The ears aren't snapped. You can see them in the picture.
                              User error. Not cars fault.
