    Difference E30 & E36

What is the difference between an E30 and E36 M42 engine?

The reason I ask is bec. I committed blasphemy and bought an e36 318is and it has a blown head gasket.
I only bought it for cheap and I wanna practice replacing the head gasket. So I saw this head gasket set from bmaparts and I don't know yet where everything goes.
If it's the same though, I could probably follow Simon S' thread when he redid his whole engine. I know I must be crazy, but I wanna really tackle this project.
Please help me identify the gaskets and seals and do I need all of them right away.

If anyone can fill in the blanks for this dude, go for it. Also, after typing "gasket" 15 times in a row.. I just realized what a weird sounding word it is. It loses it's meaning after you read/say it 10 times in a row..

      1. HG
      2. Intake Manifold gasket
      3.
      4. Valve Cover Gasket
      5. Exhaust Manifold gaskets
      6.
      7.
      8.
      9.
      10. Throttle body gasket
      11.
12/13. Spark plug gasket (same time as valve cover gasket)
      14. Oil filter..?
      15.
      16.
      17. Gaskets for each individual screw for valve cover.. (weird to replace.. not sure if you can buy the whole assembled unit, but I'd recommend it.)

Just did the same thing with an m20 it's really easy to figure out if you are the one that takes it apart. Just take lots of pictures during disassembly.

I rebuilt my m42 this past spring, doing some of it again this coming spring. It is actually a pretty simple engine to work on; besides the stupid vacuum hoses.

My friend and I had the entire engine apart in 2.5 hours, having the right tools help especially this

while not truly necessary it is way faster to take out the cam hold downs with an impact gun rather than a 1/2 turn at a time.

lets see if i can not help with that list.
              3) is either the front profile gasket or the gasket between the upper and lower timing covers. upon re examine i am almost positive the one on the left is the gasket between the upper and lower timing cases. and the one on the right is the profile gasket.

              6) No clue

              7) is the thermostat gasket

              8- Upper timing cover gaskets

              9) I wanna say is for water pump hose thingymajig area.

              11) no clue wanna say something for the exhaust based off the material.

First of all, I'm not a son.

I don't really have the funds for an engine swap right now and I wanna learn how to do this head gasket. For $600 (how much I bought the car), I don't think I can do wrong. Worst case scenario, I can just part this car out and make my money back.

So let's get back to what this thread is about.

Thank you for your input though.

                      Doesn't look too bad, at least it's a 5-speed.

                      Good luck with it!

Comes with all valve stem kits... I don't recall what exactly this is used for though.

Yes that was it. Interior was mint, no tears. Just head gasket.
                            It runs, idle is smooth.

He was asking $1800 and talked him down to $600. Coz I am awesome like that. LOL.
