If its between those two, I'd go with the boxter. Reportedly one of the best handling cars ever made. But then again I think they're pretty lame too. I'd save up for a cayman.

I will pay triple the price for a cayman lol
I also drove a friends cayman and wasnt that impressed, if I was to shell out more money I'd want a 996, Ive seen some for 15-16k
I have to be honest. I wouldn't even consider buying either.
The 01 boxter is just.. Meh... I drove one. It felt more disconnected than my E30. I don't know where the "best handling" one's were, but it wasn't this one. It might have not been an S
and the 89 944's are also very blah.. They supposedly drive better than the 911's of the same year. But I rather like the quirkyness of the 911's.
Pretty much this whole thing here is pretty illogical. And I know that. But I still stand by it.
Just biding my time until I can grab a 997.
Boxster S is a load of fun, basically a Miata with better everything, they look amazing with some suspension, hard top, and a nice set of wheels. Pretty reliable too.
The 944 Turbo I love, pretty quick, but parts are up there and if it hasn't been maintained you may be in for a headache.
I'd choose the Boxster because the 944 has the engine in the wrong spot.
The boxter s that I drove was nice, but it always felt to me like there was something missing. It was a pretty early production one, though. It handled well and sounded great but it just wasn't as involving as I was expecting. Maybe a result of all the hype. I'm a big fan of 944's, though I've never driven a turbo. I'd probably go that route. Or maybe think about an s2k, depending on your price range.
Although the boxster could embarrass most of the modified e30s on this board, I'd still be rather hesitant to get such a half assed porsche. The 944 not only has the potential to be, but is almost guaranteed to be a money pit unless it's really well maintained. 911 or 914 would be my choices.
944 Turbo S all day long. Boxter's are great, just to be honest are kinda girly (not because of the car but because of who you see driving them), If you can't get afford a Cayman go with the 944 Turbo S. You wont have to worry about depreciation. Then save for a Cayman. I love Porsche. I'm going to try to get a 996 c4s next year!
