That's just off the top of my head, I honestly never kept track because it will make you second-guess what the hell you are doing putting money into a car that is worth $3-5k tops. That doesn't include mounts, gaskets, maintenance, etc for at least 3 of the engines that have been in the car.
The best part is that I've had at least 7 E30's (that come to mind) and 4 of those were modified money pits-- This '87 eta, my '85 323i, '85 eta, and '91 318is were all hot-rodded too.
Yeah, it's a bad habit. If I didn't have cars, I might have a life.
While I'll never join the big money club (2 kids and a house) I definitely understand why/how you get there. these are definitely enthusiast cars. The longer i own it, the more I want to tinker with/ play with/ modify and restore. These cars are so easy to work on and I always feel like "Why not?"

Your best bet is checking for threads started by me titled something like 'More Eta' and 'No More S52' in members rides. Those will give you the gist of it-- physically not a very special car. But I enjoy it. If I had a current picture of it to show you it would look something like this...
Black E30 with painted euro bumpers, M-tech 1 spoiler and early front lip like the one Holland wants (in his sig, iirc it was Holland..), 5-lug front suspension with E38 16" Style 5's, and rear 4-lug with 15" BBS 2-piece wheels (I've got a full E30 M3 suspension, but Van Westervelt is supposed to be shipping me M-coupe trailing arms so I'm holding on with all of my faith). The front is sitting really high because the engine is out-- I decided that a single sump oil pan was too easy so I've got the engine on a stand waiting to put the 2-sump stock pan on and install it with a custom subframe.
Basically, it's not something you would want in your driveway with $20k in easy receipts. But I like it ;)
Mine was just north of $25k when appraised late last year. Kinda sad really, but at least I have an agreed value policy now. I do know that I never want to have to add up all my receipts again!
I'll play:
3850 for the car
Paint for my front bumper and lower lip-$10
All red tails-$5
Hours detailing the interior (no money)
Need to do the timing belt still, so I rarely drive it.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30
