      I did the same when doing a new clutch on a 6 speed e36. Once you figure out where to put the floor jack without it getting in your way it works great.

            I gave up on mine too!! I just drive it and tell myself its a normal thing for M42's. Sometimes mine is high, sometimes it gets really low, and always stays at 1300rpm when the car is rolling. unless I am stopped for atleast 5 seconds, then it will drop down to 900 (acceptable to me)- but if it idles more than 45 sec. it starts getting rough and doesn't want to accelerate at all.
