    What should I do?

I've been thinking about getting a second car for a while now but deciding which car I want to get is a struggle.

I snowboard so I like to head up to the mountain with my buddies. My 318is can't make that trip and I always have to ask for a ride.

I've been on the fence about getting a beater Subaru Legacy wagon or saving up more money to get a Subaru Forester.

But then I remembered about the IX which I like and is AWD. This would be a better choice because I know more about the car and wouldn't be lost. The downside to this is parts are hard to come by and if I do find parts they will cost me a little extra sometimes. I know about the transfer case on these and have heard that people have to fix them all the time.

Soo what I'm trying to ask is should I save my money up for an IX or go with a Subaru?

    Thanks

I'd personally go for te legacy wagon. I used to ski back in Indiana and my buddies and I would pile in one of teir wagons. Sooooo much room for activities and storage. Plus a blast on snowy backroads on the way to your mountainous destination.

Ya for awhile I was just set on the legacy. It will probably be what I want to do. And there is extra room in the back to carry parts, friends, late night nooky with the girlfriend....idk haha

There was just a euro e34 iX wagon on CL in Portland. May still be available.

Keep it simple, get a jeep cherokee xj, 4.0L inline six, it will run forever. Thats what I got for my winter beater. Did a 2" lift for $200.

              Obvious choice is obvious.

Hahah that's awesome. I know this question is kinda dumb cuz well it's an E30 forum soo I'm sure the answer is to get an IX but oh well

E30s are gnarly in the snow. Limited slip and some snow tires.

Both old legacy wagons and Jeeps are great choices.

Ya all sound great! But if I went with an IX and things start breaking or getting old, finding new parts is going to be a bitch

Yeah I was kidding in my post. Still, a ix is going to be cheaper than the Subarus I've looked at....

I wouldn't have any trouble enjoying driving a Subaru, but they are a pain in the ass to work on compared to an e30 and if you get a boosted one it's not only a pain in the ass, but more expensive to fix than an ix also.

I'd definitely go with an older Cherokee. Timeless styling, tons of room, tons of snow capability, bulletproof I6. I'll probably end up with one myself one day.

What exactly stops you from getting there in your 318? If my car wasn't lowered I'd swear it would drive through 3 foot deep snow. Just a mostly stock 318i with mid range snow tires and a worn 3.73 limited slip rear.

The wet snow in the PNW is more difficult to drive in than the dry stuff they get up North and in the Midwest.

as long as you do a jack test on the ix before you buy it and make sure the awd is working, you'll be fine.
