Petition to repalce check engine light with something useful

I'm not sure if this is the right forum and I didn't see it posted before so admins if it's not please move it to the correct location.

Basically, there is a petition to replace the useless POS "Check Engine" light on new cars with something that you don't need a scanner to read and that will display the error on a screen.

Check it out, even if you don't own a new car, one day you may, or may buy a used car that will be newer than an E30 at some point and this would be a benefit to everyone.

What exactly do you propose to replace the CEL? Its pretty damn useful and easy to use as is. CEL goes on, plug in ELM327, turn on android app, DONE. The tool costs $18 and the app is free. Is that too much for you to handle?

I'd be down for a petition to simplify cars abit. Some of the new technology can be very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing..Also making it near impossible to work on your car at home now.

I say they replace it with some big red flashing lights all over the steering wheel, and then also have an audio warning of a guy yelling "ZOMG YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE, AHAHARHRHAHRHRHSHGGGG!"

That, or leave it as-is. It works fine.

And whitehouse.gov petitions are the biggest waste of time ever. Take it from someone who used to work on the Hill. Nobody who has any power pays any attention to online petitions.

            Just sayin...

A car's generic "check engine" light makes it easier for dishonest mechanics to take advantage of unknowing customers
Perhaps the real solution is for car owners to learn about their cars, and not be moronic sheep. If they're too stupid to get an OBD code read, and look it up on the internet, then they deserve to be taken advantage of by mechanics.

It's amazing how people will fork over $20k, $30k, $50k for something, and then not try to learn a damn thing about it.

Really? How would it be helpful to "everybody?" Have you ever talked to the regular public about their car problems? The only thing this will do for sure is make people think they know more than the shops and technicians fixing their cars. We already have to face slightly educated people who think they know everything, like that alignments fix vibrations, and that Autozone just "diagnosed" their check engine light by plugging in their scanner and telling them what the codes are on for.

The only people this helps are the few enthusiasts that actually know what they are doing (aka are technicians themselves). And there are so few of us that I'd rather that not happen.

Besides, Chryslers already do that (or did that, dunno if it still works). Turn key on and off 3 times and it shows what codes are current in the computer.

The notion is (I believe) that most new cara have relatively dynamic LCD displays that can read a message that is more detailed. So instead of just check engine it might read low compression cylinder 4 or something and you could then take it to a mechanic with more information.

This. But what about codes that make it seem your catalytic converter is bad but it's really just a loose gas cap? A little kanoledge goes a long way.
