That wouldn't work on an e30 because there's nothing to grab onto when its locked...

lock smiths do that around, but use like a thin piece of metal and string

Maybe my e30's a freak, but there's only a little door lock thing to grab onto when it's unlocked, and that goes all the way into the door when it's locked, like an e46. It doesn't look like this:
