fwiw whenever i get a thumbs up or 'nice ride' it invariably comes from a kid in a jdm machine.

also, in WW2 the germans treated our p.o.w.'s much better than the japs did. they killed a full 27% of allied prisoners in captivity while the germans only killed 4%. as a former Marine that should shut him up.

I did not take that post and throw it out. I simply commented that this thread is with regards to older cars. When buying new, euros cannot touch cars such as a wrx in terms of performance because of the focus on luxury. I know this. But when I have my e30 and build it, that is different, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

How do I sound retarded may I ask?

The problem is he wont stop. I even get random texts about him meeting "homos" and they're driving only BMW all the time.

I just want ammo to fire back at him to shut him up because he's so stubborn/close minded.

e30 time era range is 1984-1993.

in the 80's era actually the Japanese were ahead of the germans on electronics/engine tuning side; many cars were full COP DIS ignition by 1988 or so with full DME controlled timing. The Japanese were using modern airflow meters or MAP sensors only by late 80's also, the germans were still using FAP FAP FAP door type air mass meters for most cars.

for instance the 1985 circa toyota 1600cc DOHC 16v NA 4 bangers were MAP sensor only with no airflow meters, 140hp. 7500rpm factory redliine, Direct cam on bucket with solid lifters. This was the everyday motor (econo-box corolla application) that commonly goes 200K+ miles with almost zero running costs.
Germany has no overall package for Performance+economy/reliabilty like Toyota in 1985; but Toyota turned out these Yamaha engineered 4 bangers for days. BMW had M10/M20/M30 sohc nonsense with 2v or DOHC S14/38. fuel economy? Not anything like a Honda 1600cc or toyota 1800cc. Nobody talks about how reliable or economical on fuel/running costs a DOHC M power ITB engine is. But you can buy a DD econo-box corolla or sentra in japan (mid 90's) with ITB's and turbo or NA. reliable and cheap also - quite contradictory to the German counterpoints; I could have installed 2x of these Japanese ITB engine's for the cost of my M20 SOHC bmw powerplant swap. Silly expensive german powerplants.

R32 skyline had its own design twin cam 6 with DOHC, solid lifters, single or twin turbo. Single or 6 throttle. Factory setup for 8500rpm+ Quite A bit higher performance package overall than any BMW or Benz product of the time. RB26dett tech and performance or 1jzgte even is quite a bit ahead of the bmw packages of their time.

Nissan had vario cam in the VH45DE 1989 or so.

I love all cars. German 80's cars tend to sound like sewing machines, the japanese ones more like motorcycles. Both are very similar to bicycles to work on as they are quite simple

                  My garage begs to differ:

I have the longevity in the E30 and the performance from the ITR. Then again, the ITR only has 40K kms on the clock and will probably outlive the E30. As someone who imported a '90 JDM EF9 Civic, I'd happily take that over an E30 (heresy I know) but as a JDM car it was on par with the E30 in finish and interior and infinitely more technologically advanced. Our domestic Civics however were below an E30 in quality.

I liken it to what I was once told by my BMW mechanic - that BMWs are the Toyota Corrollas, the Honda Civics and the Holden Commodores of their native lands.

The E30 to me is something different and a different design mentality so I like it - but then again, the only Euro car's I've owned are the E30 and a Triumph 2500S.

I like most cars that are pre-2000 and actually have personality as opposed to the bland, unoriginal look of the current crop of vehicles. That's why the E30 appeals to me - it's a Datsun 1600 in German guise :D

Maybe there's the secret to your debate - everyone has different tastes and therefore debate is pointless.

^^It looks like your E30 has PDC. Do you have any good stories about people trying to steal the ITR? A few of my friends (ITR owners) have shared some very entertaining stories with me. I've always liked them, but the number of Hondas that get stolen and chopped for parts has kept me from that route..

I guess I should put it this way: I feel like the bulk of the Japanese market is said to have been made to last, while the German market is said to have been made to perform.

And I still stand by my argument that American cars will not handle as well as a German car.

It is simple to make your "friend shut up" 1. get a hammer 2. beat his face in till he cannot speak, then cut this tongue out and feed it to his family that you invited over for dinner.

Tell your friend it isn't good to be so close minded. Each car company learns from each other and it's the best thing that could happen to the automotive industry. It's not "stealing" or "ripping off". The people that build these cars have far more capability than your friend. They engineered a machine, regardless of make, that is outstanding in their own respects.
