    vin reproduction...help please

    hi guys!

i make decals for e30s and ave had a few requests from some guys to make up vin decals that go onto the door frame. i am 100% sure that the guys that have requested them are doing it for honourable reasons, but i am just a little uneasy as if it falls into the wrong hands or ends up on the wrong car, it could be misleading.

im sure most of us can tell what a real vin sticker should look like compared to a reproduction, however, would an E30 "virgin" really be able to tell?

i know the chaps ordering just want to get their motors looking pristine, however should the reproduction have the work "reproduction" on it or something just to be on the safe side? all opinions welcome

(here's a link to my decals post just in case you have no idea what the heck i'm on about....(also, might even get a free bump if i'm lucky!))

    thanks for your time

I would put a reproduction text at the bottom of the sticker...

I would have them send a copy of the title confirming the correct number and to make sure they own the car and parts.

We have made these in the past for older classic cars.

      Thanks,

      Tyler

Are you putting the VIN numbers on it or are you doing blanks? If you are printing the actual VIN on it I'd probably request a picture of the upper half of a current title. Something showing name and address and VIN and make sure you send it to the address on the title. Also get a picture of the original sticker if possible. If they trust you with their VIN and you already have their name and address it shouldn't be an issue. I am getting ready to paint my car and would love to get one. I have no problem giving you whatever proof you need.

Edit, europlates beat me to it...

Thats pretty much what a BMW dealer would ask for before ordering you an OEM replacement key...but you can steal a car with a key. I'm not seeing what nasty mischief a person could create by ordering VIN stickers other than to maybe pretend the car has original body panels (which it very well could if it was repainted). Either way, if it didnt match the VIN on the car in their possession it would make no sense.

The reason I would request the title is to keep proof of any decals you make. I would then record these and keep track in case something falls back on him later. We do this with some of our vintage US items.

              Thanks,

We are talking fender and door VIN tags here not dash plates or the manufacturers sticker on the drivers door. Whats the value in rebadging a stolen M3 in to something else and even so, VIN stickers dont do you any good and sure wont hide the fender flares.

Unless a cop pulls you over and says "hey, your registration doesnt match your car or your dash plate but it does match your VIN stickers. Slow down and have a safe trip".

The crime is putting a title on the wrong vehicle. VIN stickers wont help you get away with it. Who even looks at them besides us e30 addicts and we are going to run it on realoem anyway.

I can see a sticker vendor wanting something so if s*^t ever happened you could say you made a reasonable effort to insure it was the right person....but stickers in the wrong hands....mehh

I thought we were talking about the manufacturers sticker. Are we talking about the little VIN tags that are on all of the body panels or the main VIN sticker?

If a DOT inspector wants to know the VIN of the body he is going to compare the sticker on the door jam to the numbers that are stamped into the body at the hood drainage area near the windsheild.

If the subject is the mfg sticker, then I withdraw my prior comments and will just say...I think its illegal to reproduce a mfg sticker.

thanks for your comments and thoughts people,

i beleive that you can actually get them from the dealer, so in this instance that would be the safest and best way of doing it. keeps me out of hot water and the car owner can be satsfied that they have done the right thing.

What about DOT-R stickers? My replacement fenders didn't come with any. :(

I rather know that then have a fender without a vin tag/another car's vin tag myself. ;)
