        why would a penny work that much better?

        it's not a good seal like a needle or screw?

            It's just simpler, not necessarily better. Really easy to find a penny laying around. Cover it in JB weld, stick it over the hole. Job done.

                    My initial idea was to plug it with a small sheetmetal screw then jb weld over that.

                      I bought some of that gas tank putty today...tomorrow will be the test. It's been curing since noon.

                            I used to use ivory soap on my old lowrider olds that I let the tank down on a curb once. would have to go back over it every now and then. I tried to JB weld the tank in my M tech II car years ago, It held for a few months and just rusted in other places. Ended up just replacing it-- and that is a crappy job.
