You are in the SOFA system, if you are not you will pay a tax. If you buy from a German there was a tax if the car was a certain dollar value but you could apply a once a year big ticket VAT for to save some $.

Fact they didn't make 87's means waiting till 2013 before they are legal.
Looks like Tourings started in Sept, 1987 as 1988's? Have to watch the build dates...

Also how do you plan to get the vehicle from where you purchased it to the port?
Depends...if it's Canada, I'd drive it (look for one in Vancouver or Victoria areas). Japan? Germany? UK? Have a friend do it for me or fly there and do it myself.

Taxes on it in the country where you purchased it.
I know if I were to purchase a car in Canada i wouldn't pay tax on it since it's being imported...don't know on the other countries.

I do have people in Japan as well...hmm...one of which is moving here in the next 12 months. HMM...crap, she doesn't have a drivers license.

If you buy a euro touring in europe, what euro goodies are you going to swap on?
Well, Id find some rare wheels, headlight wipers, a rare interior, etc. Anything I can find that is interesting and hard to get here. May as well. I know you can't fill the car with parts, which is unfortunate. I'll bolt on anything I can.

There is a bit of miss information here. a military member may ship one car on the governments expense when being stationed overseas, any other vehicles he pays the same price as any other person.
Does this mean that if they purchase a vehicle overseas and get moved back they would have to pay to ship it back? Or it would be included? Removed from the original post for accuracy.

They'll never be as desirable as a nice iS coupe.
        There, perhaps...here is another story.

I could in theory hook you up.
Would have to call some places and find out the shipping prices.

If we ship one when we move here the government will ship one back, doesn't have to be the same vehicle.

              Gorgeous car

Striker, are there any limitations on length of ownership or anything like that?

Yes, I understand that. It's 25 years from build date, though...so we can pretty easily bring cars at once they hit that mark.

Just so you know, tourings were never sold in Canada, there are just many more here as they became legal for import after 15 years.

You get one vehicle shipment on each set of PCS orders. You do not have to ship a car over to be eligible to ship a car back. My wife shipped our jeep on her orders, which we bought while in Germany.

besides the obvious fraud of using government money for your personal gain? No.

                            1: take vacation.
2: buy car to ship home.
3: drive car to shipping point the longest way possible.
4: fly home to wait for car.

it's not hard, and the military won't ship a euro spec. car even if it is over 25 years old as of about 5 years ago.

RO RO is a bunch of crap- your bumpers are going to be banged up, and anything not bolted down in the car is going to be stolen.-- hell..... I shipped my car over here in a container and there was still 5000 dollars worth of stuff stolen out of it.

finding a 1987 touring is going to be really easy................ as well as not rusty as shit.

To buy a car from a German, you do not have to pay any fees at all- as long as your not re-registering it in the German system. Keep it unregistered and buy a set of export plates to ship it out on-- they have the red bar instead of the blue on the euro plates.

I shipped my car from Chicago to NJ by open truck, NJ to Rotterdam NL in a closed container through some shitty ass worthless scumbag Netherlands company. was about 2200 including taxes and all that crap.

My buddy shipped his old 61 Mini a few years back and it ran him 2800 dollars complete to get it from here in Bamberg to North Carolina on his trailer. Said there wasn't even a question asked when he picked it up.

Ship a car that is actually worth shipping, not a crapbox rusty e30 wagon..... serious!

Finding a touring that isn't all rusted to hell is going to be your biggest issue. I see more e30s on a daily basis in Portland than I saw in two weeks in Munich.
