I never said the Chevy sprint was not a POS - it was a terrible POS.
The accord was worse though. Both were reliable.
(Chevy sprint = Geo Metro = Suzuki swift - those engines are so
reliable that - homebuilt aircraft use them quite often. They also
like Subaru boxer engines and of course the old air cooled VW.
The sprint was more fun to drive, but was a tin can. Tolerable.
If I wanted the ultimate in reliability, I would buy a Toyota.
I have an MR2 and a 4Runner, and my first and only brand new car
was a 1981 Toyota 4X4 Longbed Pickup. I put almost 200,000 miles
on it before I sold it to my Nephew. He put about 60k more and sold
it to one of his inlaws. Last I heard, it had about 350,000 miles, but
was still reliable (probably beginning to smoke by then).
I would have got a 1980's MKIII Toyota Supra, but the BMW gets much
better mileage.
But really, of all the cars I have ever owned, the Accord is probably
the only one I hated. The ergonomics felt wrong, it handle poorly,
and was as gutless as my old 1970 VW Beetle.
I know people who love their Hondas. That's part of why we bought
that car. Now I'm wondering what sort of happy cigarettes the smoked
in their Hondas. As said above - different strokes. There were some
successful autocrossers racing Hondas in Huntsville Alabama. Back then,
in that area, Miatas were the most popular autocrossers. That was around
1999, IIRC.
When we got the BMW a few weeks ago, I was not super excited -
it seemed to much like a practical commuter car. But it has grown on
me, and the more I drive it, the more I like it.
Of the cars I've owned, the ones I wish I still had are my VW Bug,
my 1968 Camaro, and my 1985 3/4 ton Heavy Duty 6.2 Diesel
Suburban. Maybe also my Toyota 4X4, and most of all... my first car,
which my dad built out of a fiberglass aux tank from an airplane
(split it down the middle and built in the area between - it resembled
a Jaguar XKE). He's 87 now, and I would love to find that car and buy
it back to restore it. I even remember the license plate number...
TYN555 (Calif). But I haven't had any luck finding it yet - no one
can remember the name of the guy I sold it to (someone my Dad
worked with). I need to at least find some pictures.
The old Fox body Mustang was a fun car. Not awesome, but fun.
Difficult to drive it well - in the right hands it had potential to
perform okay though.
But on long trips, nothing beats the comfort and convenience of
our PSD Ford Excursion. Space for musical instruments, juggling
equipment, and camping gear without sacrificing elbow space.
And it will tow a house... maybe even a small planet.
I would love to have a Type 181 VW "Thing", but they command
more money than they should. Someday I'll buy a beater and
restore it.
Would love an H1 Hummer, but they don't have nearly as much interior
space as the Excursion.
