Thanks for posting this up here OP. Been a long time lurker on this site and this is the price I have to pay, I guess :D. I just put a deposit on the body and will be driving down to South Carolina to pick it up and bring it back to the Northwest to begin a BMW hot rod build. I'm not planning on doing a rat rod build, leaning more in the hot rod direction (since that's what I grew up with), but with a BMW theme. I'd like to keep the powertrain in the e30 or 2002 family, since that's what I know (building a '91 318is now). Thinking of putting a S14 into it, if I can source one for a reasonable price, but may settle for an M10 or M42 with the appropriate transmission and diff. Your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated. Gonna be building a custom frame for the car, so options are wide open right now, but the goal is to maintain the original proportions from the exterior (with the exception of widening the fenders to put some modern wheels and tires on).

Holy shit man, excellent find. I think it would make for one hell of an over-the-top rat rod, but i've legitimately never seen one of those before so any direction you take it in will be impressive. Good luck on the build.

if it were up to me, the thing i'd put in this car is an m62 or turbo m10.

Yes, m60 at least. I can't wait for the build thread, please document it here.

Granted I don't know much about hot rods... but a little 4 cyl never really screamed out hot rod to me. :/

I particularly like where he states " The body is very sound and complete with no rust". Even though there is clearly a lot of it.

Not bad rust.... But it's far from "no rust".

No M60 is going in that thing, have you ever seen one of these in real life?
Small does not begin to describe the size of these cars.

The BMW Dixi was a licensed version of an Austin Seven. Many Austins were converted into race cars, etc. Do a Google image search for "Austin Seven Special" and revel in the awesomeness.

definitely has the makings of a cool car. built S14 or M42 (supercharged) would do nicely, especially if a modern IRS suspension is used on the custom chassis.

                        congratulations micah,

post a thread here of your build please. i will subscribe to it. i think an s14 would be appropriate as a minimum. what a fantastic project. man, if you could make an m60 fit, think how good this car would look with auburn or cord type side pipes sticking out the side of the engine cowl. perhaps making the car a convertible or chopping a couple inches out of the roof would be some other ideas for you. mz3 suspension? i think that if the guy is willing to sell the frame for a reasonable price, it would be a good idea to pick it up. it would make your fabrication so much easier even if you end up not using it.

with a car needing restoration, that kind of minor surface rust on the inside of the body is pretty much just a result of no paint on the inside of the metal. that can be taken care of so easily with media blasting or acid dip. the good news is that it looks like there is no pitting or holes. lots of good straight solid metal to work with.

I understand that, and am definitely not arguing against it. But when someone says "No rust" there better had not be any rust. If there's any rust, even surface oxidation that isn't more than .01mm deep, it goes against what your saying.

Considering it was 80 years old. It's in great condition any way you look at it. But there is ultra minor rust that will be taken care of easily as hell. No two ways about it.
