I'm going straight to the top and getting an FZJ80 land cruiser. All one could ever want in an offroad capable vehicle.
1985 M10b18. 70maybewhpoffury. Over engineered S50b30 murica BBQ swap in progress.

I had a late 80's trooper. Absolutely loved it. Picked it up for 500$. Did a headgasket and some other small things and she ran like a champ. The guy I sold it to still daily drives it and this is a good 2 years later.

If your mechanically minded and are willing to do a little work they are well worth the time.

I owned a late (2000) Trooper, worst investment I ever fell into. I wanted to buy an old Datsun/Nissan or Toyota (Truck/SUV), but my parents wouldn't loan me the money for one because they said I'd be working on it every day because it's an old car (etc, etc, same bullshit anyone with their head up their ass says). Ended up finding the Trooper, ran nice, well-equipped, comfy as all hell. I went with it.

Took it up the mountain three days after purchase, barely went off the roads, and by the time I was down the mountain the next day my tranny was toast. After that was a longgggg series of endless bullshits and learning that the transmissions they put in those cars are among the worst ever made.

Epic fail, stay far away from late models.
        Different strokes for different folks.

The only memory I have of my family's 89 trooper was an oil line exploding halfway toCalifornia, the oil feed to the turbo burst and we used a power steering line to limp it home
