s38B38 FTW...
i also think its strange when people swap non S-code motors in ///M's.
i know that there are alot of non S motors, that are more powerful than the s14, but i just figure you should stay in the S family when workin on an M car.1989 325i SETA stroker [delphin] R3V'd 8/31/2011

False. M30 weighs 8kg less than the S38b36. That is not much difference. The S14 and S38b36 only have a 100lb difference which may seem like a lot but by the time you remove the AC and air pump, you are half way to even... with 125 more hp and ft/lb of torque.
Worth it.

In 1998 installed the s38 in my m3. I love the hp an tq it puts out. If you want a link to the 89 Hartge 35-24 its on a site in Germany. I owned Alpina B6 2.8 m30 an Hartge cars.
Here some more pics.

Bullshit.
The S38 weighs 26kg more than the M30. That's over 50 lbs.
The S38 also fits terrible in the e30 engine bay. The m30 can sit farther back in the engine bay with less hammering on the firewall because of the smaller 12v head.
oem weights:
If the car to be swapped is an e30m3 I would definitely choose an S54 over an S38.Zinno '89 <24v swap in progress>

This document provides information on BMW engine codes and specifications from 1973 to 1990. It lists engine sizes from 1.5L to 3.3L, including the M10, M20, M21, and M30 engine families. For each engine code, it specifies details like displacement, cylinders, valves per cylinder, power output, torque, years of production, and fuel/engine management systems.

Both these sources back up my numbers but who knows without really weighing them side to side will all the belt driven items connected. I'm confused where an extra 50 pounds would come from since they use the same block more or less.
Either way, s54 would be sweet too but not period correct which makes the difference to me. To each his own as always.

I say s54 as well. More power than the s38, newer, not too heavy, and theres a bunch of them around. Not sure what parts cost for the s54 but I can tell you that the cost of parts for the s38b35 went through the roof in the couple years I owned that car. I can only imagine they're more expensive now.http://www.scribd.com/doc/46874380/BMWEngines
