My '89 M3 had a M30B35 in it before I put the S38B38 in last summer.....
it did pull pretty well, 0-60 ~6.5 IIRC, didn't feel nose heavy at all, left lots of spear room for turbos and superchargers, looked nice, and was very reliable.. A good engine in any E30 so to speak.
I bought my late '92 M5 in the winter of 2010 with the only intentions (besides needing a winter beater) of driving the M5 at winter / taking out the S38 / putting in M30 since I wanted a S engine in my M3 without going slower or matching speeds.. (s14)
so I drove the M5 that winter with the S38, zero grip when there was snow ofc, but when the snow started melting I was able to let the S38 do work.. SO .. then I took out my M30B35'd M3 out of the garage and got totally brain fucked over how slow it was compared to the M5 (suprise ~130hp less..) and 1 week later I had the M30 out of there
SO .. yes M30 is a nice engine leaving the M3 just a little bit quicker than with stock S14, and that added weight does so little to the handling that a M30 M3 would likely be quicker around a track than a S14'd one, and if you put a turbo on it you can easily do 400+hp with little to no internal work,
The money put in to my S38B38 transferred to money put into a M30 turbo would of left me with ~200 more hp than I have in my car right now.. but I'd rather wait some time to boost a S engine rather than cheap power from a M30 anyday!
and if you wanna leave your M3 with some honor you'll have a S engine for it. But again Alpina made it work nicely and so can anyone else, but this is the almighty E30 M3 after all

Thanks for some good information about it. I feel like if Alpina used the M30 with a little bit more power, then why would it be such a probelm now. We did not even recieve the real S motor in the M3. Another question is, why is did Alpina not use the S14 in them.
There is only one motor that should be found under the hood of an E30 M3, an S14. It can be either the 2.3 or the 2.5, but still only an S14. If you want something else, go buy something else because you have the wrong car to begin with. If you want an S38, buy an E28 M5 or an E34.
If you want more go out of your E30 M3, build the motor, turbo it, and if that isn't enough for you, sell the car to someone who will take care of it, and buy something else.
I say go for the m30b35... do something different. At the end of day you'll be the one deciding what to shove in there. Shelve the S14 and throw it back in there if you ever decide to sell it.

I bought my car with the M30 btw.. If my car when I bought at 80.000 km would've had a S14, would I swap it for a stock M30.. No, not worth it, stock S38.. maybe. Every E30 comes with little power from the factory and no I don't need anyone explaining to me about bhp/liter or it's the 80's whatever..
So seeing as I got tired of the M30's power I sure would've gotten tired of the less torquey S14 since I don't take it to a track filled with corners all the time... but a M30's power is not enough to make it worth swapping a S14 out, but turbo'ing a M30 is a whole other story, but I as many would still take a S38, S50, S54 for our E30 M3's rather than anything M30 .. but it's your car and the M30 IS a great engine.

Or if you want an S38 in an E30 M3, put an S38 into an E30 M3 and drive up the value of Will's M3 by .1%
