OP, similar situation with me. Dad bought the car in '90 (its an 88 ) and he only did maintenance and wheels. I started driving it at 15 and every big problem my mom and friends will say get rid of it. But to be honest, its a strong car now. Ive replaced a lot and learned a lot along the way and its lasted longer than most of my friends and family's 2000+ cars. Keep it and keep it going.
Do people tell you to sell your car?

My dad is a transmission specialist at the local Lincoln/mercury dealer and as soon as he saw my car, told me I was working backwards and that it was junk. False! He's just a tired American mechanic that is inexplicably in love with the soap bar ford Taurus.
This little e30 is pushing 200k and I love it more than ever. Some don't get it that we're enthusiasts but in the end, you're the driver so drive what you enjoy. Better not be a Taurus.

My dad's a tired old Toyota fart; thinks they're pretty much the Godsend car for all drivers; he drives an 97 Toyota Sienna. Yes, a Sienna. He's never owned anything other than Toyota all his life. Has never been behind the wheel of any other kind of car, let alone a German car or BMW.My dad is a transmission specialist at the local Lincoln/mercury dealer and as soon as he saw my car, told me I was working backwards and that it was junk. Tells me to sell my e30 and at least buy a "newer" car/BMW to "impress" people all the time. Funny though.. Last time I checked the people you "impress" simply by having "bling" are the people you don't want in your life.
Cool thing is about growing up; you learn to discern why people say and act the way they do; of course my dad, the tired old toyota fart he is, would tell me to sell my e30; it's not a Toyota.
Luckily, I have a slightly more open mind than that...

I've never had anyone tell me to sell my E30, yet. I've had quite a few people offer to buy it. In fact, a week after I bought my E30, someone offered me what I paid for it, plus another half.
However, when I wanted to buy it, I got major resistance from my parents (mainly father). "Bimmers always break drown" "Bimmers are expensive to work on" "Bimmers need special tools" "It's a 20 year old car, it's going to have all kinds of problems" Etc etc...
My father is a smart man, but can become extremely ignorant because of stubbornness. I shot down every comment he made with evidence and logic, and eventually got him to be OK with the idea.
Anyhow.
The only reason that getting a new vehicle as opposed to something like an E30 makes sense is if you are a lazy bastard that only cares about getting from point A to point B.
Even if you purchase an E30 that needs every single component replaced, it will cost a fraction of what a new vehicle costs, and you'll end up with a brand new E30 which will be twice the car any new vehicle will ever be.Different strokes for different folks.Comment

Its tough to get people to understand the value an enthusiast has with his/her car. Especially for the people everyone mentions "who only want to get from point A to point B".
Recently my parents are the ones that have been telling me that. Of course my mom was the first to say it cause she dosent care for cars much, which i dont have a problem with. I would consider my dad a semi-enthusiast. He is a big BMW fan, but i cant tell he would not want to put the wrench work into his car. (he drives an 08 335i). But i understand their POV since im currently a full time college student.
Regardless of any comments telling me to sell my car, this simply just wont happen.
I love my car too much to give it up. I feel more connected with an e30 more than anything ive ever driven. Everyday im constantly thinking about the next time i will be able to drive her and listen to the beautiful sound she makes when i step on the gas.
E30 FTW :)I don't even own this car anymore, but I'm too lazy to change the picture.

Haha. I have a similar story (not 25k). A few years back when my car had a full int and was pretty clean had some guy come up to me.
Guy "hey, nice E30. Want to sell it?"
Me "Give me 8 grand and its yours (i laughed while i said it)"
He said here's my info and i can have the money ready by the end of the weekend. Here's my info and let me know where to come get it. I went straight faced real quick and said sorry guy I was joking but thanks. He said well you have my info so give me a call when you are serious and I have no problem picking it up....-_-
I would never sell my car. There is something about it that when I drive it you cant get the smile off my face. Its been months since I have driven it and to be honest I miss it. My girl has an understanding that it is a family member. You cant sell a family member, thats just wrong. Lol.

i havent had e30s long...
but my family loves my car. and when my little brothers friends come over they always wanna race ,they all have like ford focus's and priusi's(not sure on the plural of that) and stupid hybrid cars. and they always ask me "how fast my car is " and i always reply "really fast, ;)" haha. its great.
but my dad used to rebuild VW's on the 70's and he kinda gets stuck on those cars sometimes. and he'll ask things like "when u gonna rebuild the carberator?" or "how many CC's is your car?" or when i tell him the car has a computer to tell it when to pump fuel and its not mechanical, he freaks out.
but my dad thinks im a madman to trying to work on a BMW.1989 325i SETA stroker [delphin] R3V'd 8/31/2011

exactly how it went with my Dad........now he wants one, especially a touring lol, he told me to never listen to what he says about buying cars ever again. :up:I've never had anyone tell me to sell my E30, yet. Word.
My dad got pretty upset when I decided to sell my 8-year-old Golf for a 22-year-old E30. Shouldn't you be upgradin', ya fuckin' idiot?
Since then he got over it and I think he's even on board with the idea. He even asks me about it when I call, if it's working well and what I'm planning on doing with it next. I haven't had the E30 for long but I think he realizes the car makes me happy and, well, I could be spending that money on cocaine or something.
Everyone else in my life is pretty keen on the car. I guess the real test is when something really does go wrong with it, but we'll have to wait and see on that one.Comment

My story is pretty similar to yours, sold my 05 grand cherokee for my e30. Most of my friends think I'm nuts for spending that kind of money on a 25 year old car and I got an earful from practically everyone in my family, especially my American car loving grandparents. My dad was the only one on board (BMW guy since he was little) but now everyone is slowing coming around. Still get lots of shit from my friends, but that probably because they always get stuck holding my drink :D. E30 for life.Word.
