    Volvo Vehicles

All I've really ever heard about Volvo vehicles is that they're great and reliable. My girlfriend and I are still looking for a new vehicle, we really like the Honda CR-V, but I'm always looking for new options and anything with better fuel economy.

I haven't looked into Volvos very much but I like the 850 wagons. What are some good Volvos? Reliability is the number one concern with fuel economy and space next. Only looking at used, and probably nothing newer than 2008 if that new. Also nothing super old, I'd really like to find something with <100K.

    Thanks!

S60R's are kinda fun, the turning radius sucks though.

The early P2s are fucking awful. Early S80s, early S60s, don't touch them with a 10 foot pole. 850s are okay but they're less than great dynamically.

Also I should probably add in that performance is probably last on the list of needs.

My parent's XC90 is the most expensive vehicle they've ever owned in terms of maintenance costs. In the 2 years we've owned it (has about 100,000km on the car) they've been through two transmissions ($3k for first repair, second still under warranty), a suspension overhaul ($1500?), 3 wheel bearings ($1500), steering box is going (clunky and loose), burns coolant slowly. Horrendous gas mileage, flip keys no longer flip etc. Just all around a money pit. This is all on top of general maintenance items like brakes where rotors are over $250 each locally. Not to mention the car was bought at 40,000km with the transmission already replaced once by the original owner.

All that being said, my dad LOVED his old V70 before it got ruined by a drunk driver and we just couldn't find another one. It ran flawlessly every day, Volvo interior's are incredible in the comfort department, they are also as safe as you could possibly want as a DD and handle snow and rain like a tank.

Find a decent 240 and it'll run for another 20 yrs with minimal PM.

they suck to work on, but 240s are basically bullet proof.

I just bought a 98 V70 turbo (which is an 850 wagon with body colored bumpers and a different dash) It has been NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. The other day I was driving it on the highway and it decided to try to burn all the oil. Still haven't figured out why.

Volvo's reputation for reliability comes from when they were "real Volvos", not Volvo owned by Ford. Around 1993 it all went downhill from there and Ford had a big stake in them and they turned into pieces of shit and are no longer Volvos as far as i'm concerned. In 1999 Ford officially bought Volvo and then they were officially done. Unfortunately, most people don't know this and still think of the reliable, real volvos. They were known for exceptional quality and very long lasting engines and parts, going for over half a million miles on the original engine easy. Take the volvo 240 for example it was legendary, basically volvo's E30. Now they are just fords.

find a 98 V70 T5 or V70R. 98 is the best year they made those. I used to sell Volvos and I've owned several.

Not true at all. Ford bought Volvo to copy the safety design Volvo offers. Ford does not make Volvos. Volvos are still made in Sweden.

                        Re-fucking post. :D

Buy a Volvo 240 Station wagon (245) and never look back.
Or if you want reliablity, opt for a late-90s Volvo 960, V90, and hell, 850's aren't too bad.

Just DO NOT BUY anything S80-Forward (1998 )

Nope, even worse. Volvo is now owned by Chinese manufacturer Geely. The first Geely influenced Volvo will be our replacement for the XC. At least Ford had some cool engines in the parts bin that Volvo was allowed to use, like the Yamaha V8.

They're great until the factory warranty runs out. Stay away, unless they're pre 1990...

I'll have to look into the 240's availability down here, my uncle's is rock solid, takes a trip down to mexico nearly every other weekend for over a decade.
