    Car won't start with M30 027 AFM

After striking out with an M30 AFM that needed my M20 circuit board since I was not willing to potentially destroy my AFM by removing the circuit board I bought an 027 AFM which I thought was supposed to be P&P. Well the car won't start when it is in (runs great with it's original AFM)

What do I need to do to make this work? I'd like to try everything before I give up.

    Gracias!

maybe I'm crazy, but stick your stock AFM back in. the only upgrade that is worth it IMO is a MAF or similar. Running an AFM designed for a completely different engine doesn't seem like a very good idea to me..

alright, crazy, you've been around this e30 thing long enough to know that it is a viable performance upgrade, nominal though it may be, it does offer some performance, and with an e30 that's saying a lot. Stefan, I don't know how to guide you here, but Dave (davelength.net) will most likely be able to help you out, and is usually more than happy to do so. Email him and see if he can.

I am doing this soon, so please keep me posted on your progress or lack thereof. Thanks.

sure, with proper tuning it could be. I just don't really think putting it into a mostly stock M20 is a great idea, and it doesn't always seem to work out that well.

I have a MarkD chip & 19lb 4 pintle injectors, which made a huge differance in the ole butt dyno. The car ran with the other AFM which was I believe 016 but I could not get it to idle correctly and after trying to remove it's electronics and completely messing it up I decided to leave it alone and get a "plug & play" one. (I sold that one at a big loss since I broke it's electronics) But with this one connected the car will not start!

          Ill keep you posted Bobby.

I'll email Dave, I have read his entire site and have everything he has except the AFPR, damn thing was not in Laredo yet. :(

well, it could be that the afm is completely dead.

That is what I am thinking. I hope not.

Well, that would be a good place to start, though I'm not exactly sure how to test it. If you can, do that.

I too have the MarkD 93 octane chip, 19# injectors, billet AFPR (same as Dave's) and the 027 AFM. I just had a custom aluminum bracket fabbed up to mount the AFM with, need to get some screws to afix the bracket to the AFM and then I'm going to go with a Weapon-R custom intake (IF they don't charge me the ridiculous $250 that was quoted the first time I contacted them; after looking at their website and their own price guide for custom setup, I think it should be more in the $150 range for the way I want it).

I also have some Racing Dynamics/Supersprint headers that will go on eventually, so that should help a bit as well. Not to mention that my intake mani is supposed to be extrude honed ( I have receipts showing the purchase and install by the p.o.) and a big bore throttle body (receipts as well, but I don't think this is what he paid for, maybe he sold it off?).

All in all, without getting INTO the motor, that will be about all that can be done to an M20, so it will be the end of the line for me until it needs a rebuild, which may take a few years to get to that point considering how well made these motors are and I've only got 106K miles on her.

This is exactly the path I am on except fortunately or unfortumnately I only have 54k and I cannot rationalize rebuilding a perfectly working motor.

I am waiting on the headers for the day I no longer have to answer to the State of California. Thay frown on things like that at smog time.

Just keep me posted please, and if you want, you can do it through pm or email to be sure that I stay in the loop. If you need a bracket, I can get one done up for you for pretty cheap, he already has a template now.

                    LMK.
