Actually.... 25 is what is totally exempt. 21 years and you don't have to meet emissions.... only safety stuff. Either way I'm still lost. If they "hinted" that you should change things yourself then what is the money you pay for? I mean... you could change everything yourself... Still eager to find out how this works out.

The money you pay for is for all of the DOT paperwork and labor that have to be completed on your behalf. Can't change everything yourself. Usually the parts they change(lights, cluster, and such) are new from the dealer.

Most of the money goes to paperwork and labor charges for work performed.

Well.... how long til you take delivery of the car? Most of the stuff that is changed could be picked up from this board or another and done here before it gets shipped out. Its just a matter of getting the RI to sign off on it I would think.....

That's what Court did, I know I sent him quit a few parts so he could do the work himself.

Not really. some stuff is more than just swapping ugly US parts on, such as installing braces inside the doors to meet with side impact laws...

Or I could swap doors..... I've already looked into it.... found the doors and everything. But the problem is getting a shop to say: "Ok, this guy has done this this this and this. Now all we've gotta do is put our seal on it and its good. Here's your bill for $400" I've heard numbers from 7300 to 3750. Just need to find out what the real deal is.

If someone knows a way to get it done like that, that'd be great.

Or, you could buy one in Canada, and get a friend at the Courthouse to get it registered in certain states.

Figure out how to import it, cause many of us would love to get a Touring.

Here's a nice one a guy was selling a while back in Canada .. he wanted around 10k and finally put it on Ebay I don't know what happened to it. I had looked into bringing it to California and emissions would have been tough alone, let alone the whole Federalizing thing for another 7k.

My own E30 lived its first year in Germany, then in Canada, then I imported it to the states, but I didn't have to go through Federalization, because it was a made for Canada/US (export) model complete with diving boards, etc.

BTW I get your drift about the welding on a serial number, but I don't see how you can just weld a serial number on because all US serial numbers would be for a sedan, not a touring. So what do you say at the smog place or DMV -- "oh it was a sedan but I did some welding and made it into a station wagon"

california is a different story, but if you register it somewhere they do no checks, you will be just fine.-maybe.
I cant see it happening till the cars are 25 years old.

When I was registering my car they never looked at it. Even so, a touring or a sedan, its probably all the same to them. Just tell them BMW never made a distinction between the 2 since the touring is 4 door.

Man oh man I'm seeing why this touring was only 100 bux. This fucker is a bucket so far. No heat is killin me. Tomorrow I'm gonna tackle that. Should have time to rip the front end off and swap out some new fenders and an mtech I front valance. Gonna look goofy with a metal bumper up front and a plastic in the back.... but it looks better than the "bent valance mod" that its got goin on now. If I've got time I'll throw the borbet cf's from my grey one on it and snap some pics. We'll see.

As far as importing.... A few people and I were talking and KY doesn't do inspections. They merely verify VIN's on the door and the dash. So a 4dr titled VIN would probably pass as a touring......

You just want my mtech I to finish yer mtech car. *LOL* No biggie.... we can do a swap if you can paint my rear valance/bumper for me. :D The mtech will probably go on the car regardless since I'll be replacing fenders tomorrow. The drivers side of the valance is bent so bad it bent the fender so I can't slide the one thats on there now back on to a non bent fender. We'll work something though.
