I'm really looking for a daily, as the 318 is not practical for school at all. I really only need something that is cheap, realible (for the long highway drives), and full of storage. I'm guessing something Japanese will fill the bill, but what models should I start looking at?

Oh yea. Even the 240 wagon is great. Driving one right now (has some nice heated seats). :)

When you mention cheap, reliable, full of storage...a minivan or station wagon comes to mind

Right now, I'm looking for something around 1,500 - 2,000 in price. I'm a po-folk college kid.
The 318 bottoms out way too much and gets neglected. The 5.2 Litre V-8 in the Dakota isn't that gas mileage friendly. I'm thinking something like a sedan or wagon. The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

Be wary of a cheap car that you will use to travel across states...it's a lucky draw with things like this...you may want to consider making me an offer on my ///M-colored eta ;)
If you're not looking to spend too much money, think about extra insurance, extra running costs as you acquire a 2nd vehicle what you will be REQUIRED to maintain. The semester is almost over, you have time to ponder over this..

I've been working on a way keeping the insurance, etc. down while I have the new car.
How reliable is the M20? I was looking at early 90s Jap-crap because that stuff seems to run forever to me. You can just look around campus and all you will see is early 90s Hondas and Toyotas. The E30 is a paradox. I know the car very well, but I know what mods I can do to make it better. I'm sure if I got an older one, it would get the back seat to the 318.The BMW 318 is back. You can also get a honda or toyota but if you get it for cheap; it's probably capable of being in need of a timing belt or chain, cv-axles, heat might not work, windows might not work, car might not pass inspection bla bla bla...the usual applies to non-bimmer car hunting. With patience, you can find a good inexpensive honda or toyota though. Just don't rush into this.
Every car needs maintenance and that's what determines how long they will last. Some may last more than others depending on certain variables but a POS to use on highway trips a lot cannot be the same POS to use for in-town driving
