how do I find out if I have R134a or r12 ac system?

I have 1992 325ic. How do I find out if I have R134a system in my car? What should I look for?

pop your hood, look at the shock tower. does it say it was retrofitted?

tbh though, if you have a 1992 it was probably dealer retrofitted. in 1994, r134a was the industry standard and it would probably have been converted under warranty.

Look at the charge fittings. R12 look like tire stems, r134a look like big air tool connectors.

I would assume not, unless it was retrofitted.

Taste it and report back with your findings.............

R134a has a smell like cow manure added to it also, not that you would want to take a deep breath of it though.

It smells especially different while smoking a cigarette, or near an open flame, but not that i would try that either.
