Cosworth designed and built the cylinder head. That's as far as their involvement goes on the "2.3-16" 190 but many refer to it as a Cosworth 190 or Cossie."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

Correct its actually the same exact tranny in the M3.
Auto was a factory option for the 2.3-16V
Be careful some 190e's were available with a "appearance package" to resemble the Cosworth. Only way to verify if it is indeed a Cosworth is by VIN# or to look under the hood. They also had a lap timer in the center console, Something the regular 190e had no need for.Comment

It's not really "the same exact tranny" since the bell housing is different and the shift mechanism is on the side rather than the front. You can't just bolt on an M3 tranny.
That's not true at all. Of course, nothing stops ghetto owners from sticking a 16v body kit on an ordinary 190E. But it was never a factory option.sigpic

You are correct sir, I was referring to the fact that both cars used a "Dog leg getrag" transmission.
I was under the belief that later model 190e's (maybe the last years 92-93) were available with "aero dynamics" that resembled the 16V, Minus the 2.3-16V badging of course. That's not true at all. You're thinking of the "Sportline" package. Looks different than the 16v aero kit: sticks out more on the sides and had stock front/rear bumper covers and no rear wing. Also, they were 2-tone.

I have an auto 190E 16V, and I'm actually growing to love it... I drive it like a stick though and run it to 6k and it moves quite well. Most people don't know the significance of the car and treat them like the regular 8 valve or 2.6. Hardly anybody remembers Aryton Senna's start as a racer in it, most don't know only @3,800 of them were imported to the US and they cost almost $50k new fully loaded. The car is IMO 400lbs. too heavy, with each front seat weighing 56lbs! Shed some weight, upgrade bushings, sways & springs this car will put a lot of modern cars to shame still.

BTW, the conversion to the Getrag dogleg trans is @$1000-$1200 in parts... The car is definitely worth it if you can find one without a lot of issues for under $5k, remember this was the classic nemesis to the M3 which drew the line for the BMW vs Mercedes rivalry to this day.

There's a guy that daily drives one here in Eugene. I've seen it parked a couple times and I've tried very-obviously checking it out to get his attention. No success, though.Comment
