It really boils down to how the local policy handles the registering/insuring a car in your area. The DMV in my area doesn't inspect the vehicle....just show up at the counter with the completed forms and pay the fees (they're always happy to take the latter). As for insurance, that depends on the carrier. A company like AAA has you stop by a regional office where an adjuster will actually look over your car before your policy is processed. Other carriers (particularly on-line sources) will never see your car when signing up with them. I have coverage through Progressive and they've never seen my car. About the only time someone from this particular carrier would actually see it is if an adjuster needs to inspect it to determine a claim amount since you were in an accident or something.

I was looking to import a car myself. Its not worth it if youre the one doing the importing. Find a touring, buy it. ONe thats already over here. Trust me the costs of federalization, smog testing, EPA, and DOT certifications FAR out weigh the factor of having a touring. It far outweighed the cost of my car, and I was gonna import something extremely rare and costly. It equalled the cost of the car. Living in California and having to do C.A.R.B. testing didnt help either, but for an M20 powered regular 325i thats just got one extra door doesnt add up. They have to do all the testing anyways, no matter if its a Sport Evo, or a 318i euro. :(
