There were millions built, but how many are left? and of those that are left, how many clean ones are left?

It is both stupid and wasteful to part out a perfectly good car. I'm with OP on this one.

I'm on the fence about it. But lean toward parting them out. They are not a rare car by any means. And besides, some cars are worth more parted out, plus it gives others a chance to live on with the parts provided.

I've parted 2 95 range rover classics and they only imported 2500. One of them we cut in half to make a trailer.

I've restored e30s that most (west coasters) would've junked. I consider it my contribution to the mark. They're not rare yet, but they will be. I guess its all in whether you can see beyond the end of your nose.

I used to part out 320iS's to build 02s. See a lot of those anymore?

I'd say that it really depends. The best thing to do would be to part all the mods and sell it stock, then everyone wins.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

                              What do you call "restoring"?

E30's deserve to be driven. There are rarely clean e30's around the Great Lakes area, and to be honest it pisses me off to see a nice car get stripped just because you might come out $250 ahead if you were to sell it outright. You really don't make that much money parting them out to be worth it anyway...
