My M3 has been around the world. Obviously it was built in Germany, first sold in California to a person who I believe to be a japanese BMW dealership owner, shipped to japan. In 2004 it was found by the previous owner and shipped from Japan to Toronto Canada. I bought it last year in Vancouver Canada and brought it back to the US. From what I can tell, the car only had 70K miles on it when I bought it.

I was stopped one day in my old AC Schnitzered E30 wagon, and asked if I would wanna trade my car plus a little cash for an M3. Turns out the PO of my M3 owned an Irish pub and need a touring to haul the Guinness kegs because he had crashed his a week before.

Well, I needed my daily, and had no play money laying around at the time, So I offered to trade my 2 y/o S10 ext. cab with hydraulics and 18" wheels(were huge back in 2001) and less than 12,000 miles.

Now, I don't have an S10 and I do have an M3. The wife cried for weeks and everyone I knew told me I was an idiot/I was the joke of the area back then..........
the bondoed over BMW emblem blew off on the way home and the distributor cap melted on the way home, right after the hose clamped on p.s. pump fell off.

My M3 is a 1986 build, was first registered by BMW Münich in Dec. 1987. it is one of the first 300 built.
I believe it is one of the first cars to have 17"BBS RS wheels on it, they have been on the car since 1991, as well as it being as low as it is since then too.

it also has not been registered since 1991, only driven on dealer plates since then.

I still stop by the P.O. to let him see the car about once a year.

I turn hunks-o-crap into nice cars! IE buy cheap, improve, drive.

All my BMW's are engine swapped, auto - manual converted, and in no way comparable to when I first bought them.

Interesting stories, wow. I don't know much about my E30's history. 7th owner, has some history on R3v.. Anyone know anything about mine?

Getting it was interesting. I found it on R3v, fell in love, talked to the PO (who I think is still partially active on here?), got a loan, and bought a one-way plane ticket to LA. Flew to LA at around 6am on a Saturday morning (middle of school semester) and the PO rolled up in the E30 to get me at LAX. Gave the car a quick check over, saw nothing horrible, took it for a test drive. Stalled about six times trying to get out of an incredibly tight parallel parking spot before making it (and informing PO it was my first time driving a stick). Fell in love with the car instantly. We ended up having to wait for the post office to open and grabbed breakfast. Definitely the weirdest car transaction I've ever been in, but PO turned out to be really chill. Purchased car, then learned how to drive a stick on the 500 mile trip back to Tucson. Love my E30.

It may be off-topic but the story of getting my 280Z is pretty different.

When I was 10 years old my parents moved their business out of the house and into a small office building which used to be a house (and was at the edge of a neighborhood). I cleaned the office every weekend to make money for lunch and clothes, and it was then that I first saw a Z car. The house at the opposite end of the street had a white 280Z parked in front of it. I saw the car every weekend and dreamed of driving it someday, and started noticing the older Z cars around town on occasion. I promised myself I would own one someday. The years passed and the white 280Z was always at that house. During high school I was rarely at my parents office and forgot about it somewhat. It wasn't until February of 2011 that I was down there re-coating the roof for my parents that I saw it again. After coating the roof that day I went over to check it out. It looked like it had been sitting for some time, but looked to be in quite good condition. I couldn't stop thinking about it so I went back the next day and knocked on the door of the house to see if the owner was home, nothing. I left a note with my phone number and didn't hear anything back for two weeks. I figured that the owner wasn't interested in selling it, but couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to own it. Another week passed and I was in the area with my girlfriend and decided to go try one last time. We went up and knocked on the door, nothing, tried again, nothing. I said fuck it, it's not meant to be and we walked back to the car. Right before we got in an older man came out and called to us. I told him my story about seeing the car for years and that I was interested in checking it out and if it was for sale. He said he didn't know if he was interested in selling it, but he gave me his card. I called him a few days later asking if I could come check the car out and he said sure. It turned out the car was almost completely rust-free and in great condition, it was even freshly re-carpeted, but it had been sitting for eight years since the PO had injured his hip in a crash (different vehicle). PO ended up telling me some history about it, how he bought a '72 fresh off the lot, sold it and bought a '76 2+2 and hated it, sold it, and finally got the '77 280Z. He said his favourite memory with the car was when him and his buddy were cruising down the freeway with the sunset smoking a joint when they heard Hotel California play for the first time on the radio. Anyhow, I was totally sold and asked if he would sell the car. He was a little resistant but finally said for no less than $1500. I didn't have the money at the time so I said I would get back to him. I had about $500 extra cash saved up and decided to see if he would take $800. When I first offered $800 he said absolutely not, but then his tone changed, and he said that I reminded him of when he was a younger and he would give it to me for $1000. Hadn't been much more excited in my life. I got my uncle to loan me $500 and drove over to take home my prize. It was almost sad because I could tell he was going to miss the car forever. He took some pictures of it and actually wanted a picture of me standing with the car. After a long wait for the tow-truck I was off with my "brand new" 280Z. A few weeks later I got an email from him which was also forwarded to all his friends and family with the picture of the Z and I and the story of the car. Turns out over the eight years that it sat he had people try and buy it dozens of times, but he never parted with it, but he said he knew that it was going to the right home with me and that allowed him to let it go. Rest is history.

If you read that, congratulations, and I hope you at least found it interesting.

                        Cheers,
                        Kai

When I first got mine I found all the paper work from the original owner in the trunk.

Inside it, was a note from a fellow E30 owner that must have been left with the car. It explained that he had a part that apparently was broken, and a phone number to contact him.

I had no idea how old it was, so I tried calling the guy for kicks, but no one answered.

Other than that, my brother rescued the car out of a field. Installed a new slave cylinder and drove it for a year or so, until the timing belt snapped. He towed it to me 2 days before Christmas, and I swapped the motor out and drove it home Christmas eve.

I know my car started life on the West Coast in or around Palo Alto with rear seat headrests (which would have been awesome....), then made a cross-country trip in the late '90s to Mass. Then it was sold at auction a couple years later to a Greek diner owner, then bought by a Saab guy near me like 4 or 5 years ago. He got in some kind of a wreck with it and replaced the left rear corner, then sold it to the PO whose dad is the head driving instructor of the Patroon BMWCCA chapter, which I belonged to because of my 2002. He sold it to focus on his job, and I later ran into the Saab owner at an exit ramp near my house. He pulled up next to me, gave the "sup" head nod, and said, "I recognize that dent!" We pulled over and he filled me in.

I was filling up my old Zinno at a gas station in town, a Chevy truck merged over four lanes bombing into the gas station, he hops out and goes "I built this car!". He told me all the in's and out's of it, showed me the build video on YouTube, etc. Turns out it was owned by a Marin County police officer, then Ryan Gangemi, then a San Jose police officer lol.

My Alpine doesn't have any special history, build thread, or anything interesting. :(
