The parts are more expensive than E30, but if you do your own work its not too bad. The '84-'89 3.2 liter 911 is Motronic just like E30 and very durable and simple.
The gearboxes are slightly unusual and not bulletproof through '86. The 3.2 engine had valve guide issues (wear) but otherwise will go a long time.

I've been holding back on revealing the purpose of this thread because it's pretty blasphemous.. I've always wanted a Porsche 911, but never wanted to own a vehicle that requires a lot of expensive maintenance just to enjoy.
But, I've been thinking and hoping that as long as the suspension and body is solid and the problematic areas of these cars are the motors and related systems then it would be perfect to convert to an electric track toy.
So far it sounds like it's a perfect candidate !Different strokes for different folks.

If you're talking about replacing parts on a 30 year old car, that's going to need to be done no matter what brand is being discussed.S50'd

How are the 944's? They are more plentiful (at least around here), cheaper, and I do enjoy the look a lot.

944 = torque tube/divorced clutch = big pain in the ass when they fail.
944 are momentum cars and in non turbo form and yawn inspiring, the interiors are usually falling apart from being user maintained and loosing pieces.
911s are nice, but and early 70s car will most likely have some rust issues and those without bring top $. the trans are strong in the 74 and later cars, but the early ones suffer from syncro problems mostly from user abuse with the dogleg trans.
motor wise, with the exception of valve adjustments and oil leaks they are pretty bullet proof. the CIS injection is expensive when things go wrong, but with a properly maintained system, this is not an issue. the "injectors" can not be cleaned very well on a car with a lot of miles so i would suggest you buy a new set of injectors (you will only have to do this once in the life of the car)
914s are pretty cheap and are mid engine. if you are going to strip in and make it a track car this might be your cheapest route. the 4 cyl is pretty weak in stock form but can be built up to a 3.1 IIRC as long as your pockets are deep enough. you could also swap in a flat 6, but having done this, other than the noise, it was really not worth it.
you can also swap in a suberu turbo motor for a more modern motor with cheaper modding abilities and big power while keeping it light weight.
also a lot of the 911 suspension will swap over to the 914.
BEFORE you go day dreaming about your racing glory...............didn't you knock up your GF not too long ago? how are you going to pay for all this with a kid too?Last edited by der affe; 10-21-2012, 09:29 PM.seien Sie größer, als Sie erscheinen

The peckers that drive them.
Otherwise, they're pretty characterful cars. Not Citroen- crazy, but mechanically different enough
to take you back to school.
You like 'em or you don't. I like driving them, but it takes a while to get used to
having all that mass in your ass. As a passenger, they make me barf. Something
about the way they change direction...
Chassis rust is a problem up until a certain point.
tnow, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves
