Who was the first to 24v swap?

Just a random curiousity, who was the OG that first swapped a 24v engine into the e30?

Would be cool to see a build thread or something like it

I'm sure it was someone in Germany that worked at BMW, and had an M50 even before the E34 rolled off the line with them.

In all reality though, chances are it happened waaay before any internet forums (NOT including BBS's) existed.

It's odd to think about the guy or guys who figured out all the little things and parts needed for the swap.

There has to be some way to find out

10 second Google search reveals this. Is it true? Who knows...

My dad did several (I believe it was 3) S38 swaps to M3's late '80s/ early '90s.

He took on alot of wrecked cars back then and rebuilt them.

There was someone in Finland who I've heard about that worked alot with him that did that before him tho' = S38 to E30.

I'm not sure but I'd have to say in the US....Pete Mc Henry in Winston Salem. He was the godfather of performance bmw engines. When I called him in the mid 90s he had moved on from stroker m20s to m50 swaps. Everyone followed his lead, then the info on how to do it spread like wildfire. No one was really doing any conversions before Pete did them. The bmw community was a lot different then.

No doubt BMW did, when I was at BMW training in Culver City after class we would sneak into their play room and they would always have some frankencar they were experimenting on. It has been a while and don't remember them specifically but they liked doing transplants like this and they had access to all the different ones to play with :)

QFT. I went to high school with Alex & Stu. Seeing their cars & spending some time in Pete's workspace was, without a doubt, the beginning of my interest in BMW & the e30 chassis. Alex just picked up another e30 recently and posted some pics on Facebook, I'll be curious to see if he starts popping up here.
