If you want reliable, fuel efficient and cheap, why are you buying a new car?

If you went with something like a late 00's Focus or something it would have been far less to purchase and just as reliable ( maybe a few extra features/options?) The marginal fuel savings would be hard to re-coop in the long run

buying a new car to save money...interdasting
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

I really don't mind the point a to b idea, and love the fact I can drive it into the ground with free oil changes lol...brakes, tires and wipers don't bother me...

this is why there are so many of them around. Its basically care free transportation. for what it is its really not that bad.

It still sucks in from an enthusiast standpoint, but that doesnt matter. Its not made to perform. its make to transport. ha

        WAIT I just noticed something....

The person who bought the car in August LEASED the vehicle....How/why the hell did they back out of a lease? They still have to assume the payments on the lease...

Did someone die in this car? wtf happened? how can I find out if the dealer wont tell me, I dont think they have too...

Have friends with that style focus....they call it the fuck us.. Quite the shitty car in my opinion. Anything before 07 from ford is trash in my book, besides the trucks and rustangs. New Ford on the other hand...very nice.

This is what Im trading in: 2000 eclipse gt, white on tan. Sunroof leaks, doors leak, windshield leaks. Carpets are rotting, trans sounds like a ticking time bomb at idle. Engine runs smooth but it burns oil AND coolant. I redlined it for the second time in my year of owning it TODAY and cringed thinking something was going to blow. OH and every body panel has clear coat peeling and cracked paint. Car is a shitbox.

I found my girlfriend a '96 geo metro for $400 bucks on CL. Put a new radiator, tires, and cat on it, changed all the fluids and for less than a $1000 dollars total counting registration fees she's been commuting at 47 mpg.

it's been about three months since she's had it so I'm pretty sure she's already paid for the car with gas savings

Really? That Focus gets exported and does quite well. Chevrolet Optra too. Your book needs a little revision, it's a little outdated. If something sells where I live it's bound to be Japanese rivalry as everything here is Japanese.

Maybe they build it differently? I know of a few focuses that are not reliable at all....What year are we talking? Anything before 07 here in the US was made with a different standard then they do today.....Ford today is a GREAT vehicle.

Geo metros are few and far between....a car from 96 is going to be 16 years old. I'm not interested in fixing odds and ends getting the car to and from work. Plus finding a geo metro for 400 bucks is a steal I used to see ads on CL for way more than that...

I have money for a down payment and an income that will easily cover my payments. I dont have money or TIME for repairs on a car Id be buying. Doesn't make sense to look for a reliable car and end up spending more than I paid just to get it to drive. You have the time to do those repairs...I do not.

true, guess I had the luxury of the fifteen minutes it took me to install the radiator

the point is if you're looking for a commuter you're looking at the wrong factors

find something that gets high gas mileage as your primary factor and go from there
for me a metro was a viable option but there are a slew of other similar econoboxes from the mid-90's that will easily run for half a million miles and get over 40 mpg with minimal maintenance from a driver

buying a new car off the lot to save money is the least intelligent way to go about it regardless of income level

So should I just go look at used cars that I should know/expect to last a bit? This will not only be my commuter but also my daily...my vert is garaged and probably for at least another few months if things go well. I cant suffer a break down, because I have zero access to any other cars.

Here enlies another problem, finding financing on a vehicle that's cheap is hard...financing a car without a warranty seems like a risk. I have to finance, no question.
