If you are with Progressive you are fucked anyway. Damage to my GF's '03 Malibu was estimated between $2500 and $3500.

    They paid us $1100.

I will be going elsewhere. We are 42 and 45, no tickets, homeowners, non-smokers.

We also have 3 teenagers who will soon be insured, a small business, 3 cars, a work van...I would think we are worth working with. Progressive can eat my cats' ass.

    Great post, BTW.

On topic...if you were to get in an accident, it'd be either small enough for you to repair with six months worth of full-coverage insurance, or big enough where you wouldn't want the E30 anymore anyway. And if you got in that large of an accident, the little money you'd get from insurance isn't enough to offset the money you save, because a salvage title E30 gets the lowest rating in KBB.

You guys should get AAA, it's a nice thing to have. I wouldn't want my car towed any other way but flatbed.

so your looking for a reason to justify to your wife that you really want to get the late model you've always wanted?

no one should ever fully insure e30's. they'll total the thing no matter what the damage is, i just pulled my full coverage.

            1. You paid 2500 for a bone stock eta with a salvage title?

            2. Do you think leaving the mods on the car will help it sell for more? No.

            3. Do you think it will be easy to sell a car with a salvage title for much $$? No.

If you are intent on selling it, I'd pull off the suspension bits first. And get an M20B25, not an M42. You have sepnt enough time in a weaksauce car.

I have full coverage on my e30. Its not much more a month.

I also have a 1in thick binder with 90% of my car related invoices etc.

Josh I say keep the car. No one is going to pay what you paid for it. Its going to be a lose lose on your end.

Paying the extra money for full coverage does seem like kind of a waste.
                BINGO.

Josh, to put it nicely, this whole plan is fucking stupid. Albeit, you are trying to think as logically as you can, you forget it's not worth all that work or thought. I mean, what are you going to do if you get in an accident? take a tiny bit of money for your e30 and then get another one. well, you're going to be paying more per month just in case that happens. . .

and these are e30s. they are cheap to replace, then just swap the shit you have on it over. you're not going to do a full on custom job like Jordo, it'll be suspension, little engine shit, and maybe a body kit. Nothing you can't put on your next car.

I mean, honestly, look at e9nine for example. I mentioned this in a conversation with my mother about how unlucky he's been, but he has found a new shell and moved on for cheap, just swapping shit over.

My mom was the one who brought up full coverage on my car, as obviously i have put a lot of money into it, as well as blood, sweat, and effort. But honestly, it's not worth the expense of spending anymore per month to protect that because chip, injectors, engine, differential, suspension, seat, etc will all swap over if anything (hopefully not) ever happens. Even with shitty collegiate drivers all around me, i'm on liability only. Just drive defensively, as Sean mentioned. And don't drive like a shithead either, be safe and save the $ per month.

Therefore, Josh, don't worry about it. You got panicked and worried over something you shouldn't have because full coverage just doesn't make that much sense for 99% of E30s. So, keep the car you love, and relax. It's coooool.

Unless you can find a non-running e-30 and bring it back up to drivable status, I dont think you will get your money back out of it no matter what you put into it. The e-30 is a 15 year old car at best, and unless you can find a special person, they are going to pay for a 15 year old car with likely 100k+ miles on the chassis. Seriously, if your car was totalled for a dent in the rear... I would rather not worry about my own insurance totaling my car for $2000. I am sure there are some other companies that specialize in restored/older cars, but I am not 100% on those. I am sure they cost lots of $$ also.

Jordan, do you have a rider that covers your mods? I mean how does your coverage factor all the time/money you have in the condition of your car?

my insurance is so cheap anyway I don't see why I wouldn't have full coverage (comp/collsion). I wouldn't be able to replace my car for $1200 like most of you guys either...

I found out some distressing news this last week. As some of you know, I bought my car from Ted (uofom3) and his father. It was previously owned by Dave and Evan Lumbra of 2002 Restorations in Eugene. Well, years back my car was in an accident in which the passenger rear quarter panel was smashed in. There was no frame damage, so a new panel was grafted in, and everything was fixed. The problem is, there was enough damage to the car to total it, so now the car has a reconstructed (totalled) title. Before anyone freaks, I knew that when I bought it. So what's the problem? I found out that I can't put full coverage insurance on the car. Oregon state law prohibits full coverage insurance from being placed on a car with a reconstructed or salvage title, since to the insurance companies, it's a dead car that's not worth anything. I can only insure it with liability. Which means if someone hits me, I'm fucked.

So I've decided that I'm going to sell the car, and buy another E30, and here's the decision I'm faced with. I've got a good deal into the suspension (IE stage III's and Konis), and it's also got a JimC chip. I'm going to either get a 325i or a 318iS, so that wouldn't be of any use to me, anyway. Since I can't afford to buy another E30, and swap the suspension and a few other things from it to the new one, I've got to sell this one first. Should I leave the suspension, in order to get more for the car, or should I keep it, and chance not getting as much? I don't have another set of rims to put on it, so the wheels would go with it, helping a fair amount. I paid $2500 for the car, bone stock and in pristine shape. It's still in beautiful condition, and it would be sold with the chip and the wheels, so those would be good selling points, and I'd ask for the same. With the wheels and the chip, I think that's reasonable. I really don't want to have to start all over with suspension, and this stuff has hardly any mileage on it, so I'd really like to keep it, and just swap it into the new car.

                            What do you guys think?
What is the price difference (ever 6 months) for Full coverage vs. limited coverage? If its significant, then skip full coverage anyways.

IMO, keep the car. It doesn't make financial sense to sell it. You won't get the money you want out of it, and you'll be starting all over again. Keep the limited coverage, and pocket the extra cash (save it, put it towards the family, put it towards the car....)

                            Jonathan

Given your publicly admitted driving habits, that really was a boner move, eh?

But then again, its not like Mommy didn't go buy you another car.
