    Bavarian Engine Exchange?

I'm contemplating ordering a new, completely rebuilt engine from Bavarian Engine Exchange in CA to drop in my '89 325i (original has 170xxx miles, head needs rebuilding and I don't want to blow the bottom end apart with a new, tighter sealing head) and I was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with this company in the past... they have a rebuilt M20 complete with all necessary gaskets, essentially a "plug and play" engine for $3623. Just curious to see if anyone has an engine rebuilt by them, or knows someone who does, and what the reliability is on them.

Also, how would this price rate as far as having my current engine rebuilt? Would I save more by rebuilding my current block and head or should I go ahead with the entirely new powerplant?

    Thanks in advance.

I have no personal experience with them as I was steered away from them many years ago. I have heard nothing but bad stories about them. I don't know if these stories are true, but I'm not willing to ever take the chance.

I was also steered away from them by several people. Most of what I've heard is that you get an engine that is only "rebuilt" in the loosest sense of the word. I've known people that have gotten engines from them that weren't even rebuilt, just taken from low mileage cars. Don't buy anything from them. It looks like a great deal, but they are scammers.

$3200 not really. to offer a guarantee you should price the item at 150% of what the cost would be.

My work has done some buisness with them and they SEEM like pretty good guys. although $3600 is a shit load of money to rebuild a M20 to stock. we could probably rebuild your engine for less than that and get a little more power out of it. our website is in my sig.

I was in your position 6 months ago and....

was debating between rebuilding the engine and buying a used one with lower mileage. Well, I went into Niello BMW one day for oil filters and had chance to talk to the master mechanic at their service department about my choiices. He told me that I can buy a crated engine from BMW for $3100 shipped to your shop/house. This is a brand new engine.

Also, Bavarian Exchange is about 25 mins from my home and I would never ever buy anything from them. I think I have better chance with my money at Vegas than doing business with Bavarian Engine Exchange. Those guys would take your money and sell you crab.

To order a crate motor, who do I need to get in touch with at BMW?

Thanks for the replies, I think I'll stick to a factory new motor or rebuild the block/head I have.

I think Jim Warren might be the only one that would spend $3,600 building up a bone stock M20 ;)

                  Just messing JW.

Just so you know.... i dont know the names off the top of my head but there are a few good companies that deal in selling bmw engines. I think you should do a little more research before you turn to a dealer, b/c i know that those companies sell high quality rebuild engines for 2K. Thats 2/3 of the cost my friend. If you dont care... then i say go the BMW dealerships route.

Does anyone know the names of some of these engine dealers? I'm very interested, and yeah, I definitely want to explore all my possiblities before going to BMW themselves and having my wallet raped
